Dark and forbidding ...

Lady Tess longed to return in peace to her beloved Remmington Castle - but she never thought that the price of reclaiming her land would be marriage to the most notorious warlord in all England. Fierce and fearless, Kenric of Montague had never admitted defeat, and now he demanded Tess's loyalty - and her surrender. But how could she give herself to a man who pledged to keep her safe yet stirred her most dangerous passions?

Beautiful and innocent ...

Scarred by war and the dark secret of his birth, Kenric of Montague had no wish for a wife ... until he beheld Tess of Remmington, the magnificent woman pledged to be his bride. Yet even as he gave in to his aching hunger to possess her, he vowed that Tess would never tame his savage heart. But when a treacherous plot threatens to part them, Kenric will find himself drawing his sword - and risking his life - to save the only woman who could capture his sole ...

Tess appears to be meek and shy early on but she find's her gumption quickly once away from the treacherous influence of her step-family and becomes a strong character, believing in her own abilities and fighting for what she wants - Kenric.

Kenric is a battle-hardened, world-weary and ruthless knight who upon order of the King marries Tess in a quick ceremony shortly after meeting her. I was rather surprised that such an almost bitter character could fall in love so quickly whilst anticipating betrayal from the woman he comes to care for more than he ever thought possible, even though through the majority of the tale he does not like it.

This is a fantastic read, definitely a keeper.

Wonderful Book 8 Aug 2001
Format:Paperback
This is the first book I have read by this author and I hope it will not be the last, set in 1283 in England it is the story of the fierce warrior Kenric and Lady Tess who has been held prisoner by her cruel stepfather, he has taken over her lands and wants her to marry his son, but Tess marries Kenric... although she is frightened of him and his reputation... I liked this story very much, a book that I call a keeper and which I have read many times, although Tess was very timid in the beginning because of what she had suffered at the hands of her stepfather and his son, in the end she did gain the respect and love of every one in the castle.

The book may have had another star if it weren't for the heroine. But before I get into that, briefly the book is a medieval romance regarding Tess of Remmington's arranged marriage (by order of the King) to Kenric of Montague. Her relatives are the brutal sort (and portrayed in a very typical 'evil family' way). Much of the story centres around day to day life with the odd rift, misunderstanding and fight thrown in.

Unfortunately, Tess is portrayed as the ask-no-questions, never think about practicalities and never use logic or brain cells brand of heroine. Basically, she's incredibly naive (or just dim?) and passive. She jumps to silly conclusions and her thought process suggests that she's quite simple. I'm not sure why an author would think a woman would be endeared to read about such a heroine. I almost felt insulted in some parts by just how nonsensical she was. Another negative point is that this is the type of book which relies on multiple obvious and dragging misunderstandings between Hero and heroine which I find lazy in a romance. The romance aspect of it, also, is nothing ground-breaking. Don't misunderstand this review as me hating romances/being a cynic. I do not believe all romances are predictable and the same at all - there have been some romance novels that have really caught me hard. In comparison to such reads, the romance in this was lukewarm at best and samey.

Also, the book is very reminiscent of a Julie Garwood novel. As in some parts you may even mistake this book for a Garwood book with an almost identical hero and heroine(regarding looks, mannerisms, depiction, the way they speak and the the authors writing style). Not sure why this hasn't been flagged up over at Amazon.com but it's uncanny.

This book is apparently supposed to be a medieval. A running theme throughout regards the heroine and her 'special abilities/powers'. She can see into the future and see her fate etc. The result is that the book reads more like a fantasy than a historical. Historical's are already far removed as it is but adding an element such as this made the setting/era farcical and unimaginable.

There are much better medieval romance's out there to loose yourself in. I would not recommend this to anyone who was a fan of reading such a book.
