By Mark Klobas TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Sent out to deal with a troublesome warlord on the imperial frontier, Lieutenant Oswald Bastable, an army officer in 1902 India, unexpectedly finds himself in a 1973 where airships ply the skies and the British Empire continues to thrive. Feigning amnesia, he adapts quickly to life in a world which seems nothing less than idyllic. Yet Bastable's path soon leads to a series of adventures that cause him to reexamine his initial assumptions and lead him to embrace a cause very different from the ones he was trained to defend.

The first novel in his "Nomad of Time" trilogy, Michael Moorcock provides readers of this book with an old-fashioned pulp adventure in a steampunk setting. This combination works thanks in no small part to Moorcock's skills as a writer, which produce a novel that transcends the works which inspired it. He keeps the narrative moving along briskly, and adapts both the tropes of the form and the politics which drive the story in the later chapters to produce a highly entertaining read, one that has aged well in comparison to other novels of its type. This is an excellent starting point for someone wishing to explore the steampunk genre, as well as a fun read for anyone seeking a good book with which to pass the time.

Format:Paperback
The Warlord of the Air concerns one Captain Oswald Bastable's trip to an alternate 1973 timeline, where globalisation has led to a seeming utopia. A fast moving tale mixing equal parts adventure and satire, with numerous appearances of real life historical figures in telling roles. A perfect balance between a superficially straightforward adventure story and a political cautionary tale.

After going to a great length of trouble to get a hold of this now out-of-print book, I immediately began reading once my copy arrived having been intrigued by the books concept when I first heard of it. From the moment I began, it was incredibly difficult to put it down. I finished the entire book in a time span of one day, and it was a relatively fast read but an incredibly enjoyable one. Moorcock gives us a glimpse into a nightmare world where World War One never occurred to bankrupt the Imperial superpowers and extreme racism, colonialism and imperialism continue unchecked into the 1970s. Our hero is Oswald Bastable, a man transported into this world via supernatural means after a failed attempt to subdue a colonial rebel in our 1903 British India. At first he believes this world to be a utopia, seeing the perfect state this worlds European superpowers are in, however he soon sees that this utopia is based upon the ruthless exploitation of the imperial powers colonies. This is a must read for fans of both alternate history and steampunk and in my opinion its a perfect blend of the two as well as a founding father of the latter. I definitely recommend.

EDIT: Huzzah! somebody somewhere decided to start having this amazing work of fiction and its sequels printed again and it is to be released in January 2013, so if you can wait i'd hang on until then.
