Product Description

This special 25th Anniversary Edition contains new and previously unseen material including the first draft opening of 'The Magic Quest', a fold-out map of Firetop Mountain, and the story of Fighting Fantasy. Part story, part game, this is a book with a difference - one in which you become the hero! Armed with two dice, a pencil and an eraser, you can set off on a perilous quest to find the Warlock's treasure. You will need to decide which route to follow, and which monsters to fight in the elaborate combat system given in the book. You may not survive your first journey. But with experience, skill and luck, each fresh attempt should bring you nearer to your great goal ...

I stumbled across this re-issue by chance and was then lucky enough to pick up a copy signed by both the Authors (Jackson and Livingstone) though the description of the extras was enough to lure me into buying.

Straight to the extras, I managed to read through them all in about 20 minutes on the morning that the book arrived. Fair enough, they're all there as promised but definitely lacking in their depth and 'exclusive' status (a lot of the facts and bonus trivia I had already found on various fansites of the series).

The best bit about this book is the quality, it's a very thick hardback edition with the original title's artwork perfectly transferred. First thoughts were how great it would be if they re-released all the series in this identical format - it would certainly be the ultimate Fighting Fantasy collector's edition.

If you're buying this for the 'wealth of extras' that it promises, you may feel you have been sold slightly short. If you're buying this for a top quality reprint of a classic, in a collectors format, you'll probably be quite pleased.

This reprint is fantastic (a lot clearer than the paperback versions) the classic artwork by Russ Nicholson looks amazing ;his contribution to this book lifts it to something really special.

And to all you teens out there ...put down Harry Potter and buy a copy of this (the best version of THE definitive gamebook)

First published in 1982, THE WARLOCK OF FIRETOP MOUNTAIN started the whole gamebook craze. The first Fighting Fantasy Gamebook, it uses a simple rules system utilising three attributes (Skill, Stamina and Luck) which are determined by dice rolls at the beginning of the book. The adventure is to fight your way through Firetop Mountain at the request of villagers from nearby Anvil, to slay the Warlock tyrant who is holding them in fear.

The game system is quick to use and exciting, and the story (basically a dungeon crawl) is well written. There are plenty of dice rolling combat situations to partake in too, and at a reasonable length of 400 paragraphs (which would become the standard for the Fighting Fantasy Gamebook series) this was a worthy initial gamebook for the series.
Two dice, a pencil and an eraser as all that is needed to play with this excellent book.

This hardback 25th Anniversary Edition has been signed by the authors, and has a wealth of Fighting Fantasy information in the back, including a paragraph by paragraph walkthrough and a map to Firetop Mountain. With the original cover back in place, this excellent collector's book should not be missed!
