Product Description

The Warden War continues the quest begun by Prince Donald in The Warden Threat. His father, the King of Westgrove, has been told that the neighboring kingdom of Gotrox has discovered a magical means to animate a mysterious and gigantic ancient stone warrior, the Warden of Mystic Defiance, which it plans to use it to spearhead an invasion of his kingdom. Donald is convinced this is a hoax carefully crafted by his father's chief advisor to bring about a war. Donald is determined to thwart him. It will not be easy. Chief Advisor Horace Barter has resources, connections, influence, and the almost unquestioned trust of the king. Donald, sadly, has none of these. What the young prince does have is a nominal position with the diplomatic team being sent to Gotrox and the companionship of a few rather unique friends including a pair of 15,000 year old androids, one of which is a dog--or a reasonable facsimile thereof.

This lighthearted parody is unique--a soft science fiction counter-fantasy, which pokes a fair amount of good-natured fun at the serious tone and dependence on magic common to many epic fantasy adventure genre novels. With charming and truly likeable characters, witty, intelligent humor, and prose style blending positive science fiction and epic fantasy elements, the Warden books are a delight, perfect for readers of these genres yearning for something fresh and different.

This book is also available in the omnibus edition Defying Fate, which includes both The Warden Threat and its sequel, The Warden War. Defying Fate is a Kindle exclusive.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Sequel 15 April 2012
By M. A. Goethe - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is the sequel to The Warden Threat, starting mere days after the end of the first book. Be warned that it won't make a lot of sense if you don't read the first beforehand. Go ahead - it's worth the reading.

The Kingdom of Westgrove is on the verge of war with the smaller state of Gotrox. Prince Donald of Westgrove, youngest son of the King, has discovered that the confrontation has been manufactured by the King's chief adviser and is desperately trying to stop the war before it happens. Together with his friends Kwestor, Muce, Trixie, Nash and a strangely intelligent dog named Moe he crisscrosses parts of three kingdoms, dodging assassins and armies all the while, looking for a solution. The climax takes place at the last second as armies mass on the borders and the conflagration looms. It is up to Prince Donald to stop it.

This book has much more of a science fiction feel than The Warden Threat, with the humorous parody of traditional fantasy and current events still present. The comparison to Terry Pratchett's work remains apt, a comparison I consider a high compliment. Give this book a try, you won't regret it.
4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, Fresh Fantasy 28 Aug 2012
By Maria T. Violante - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The Warden War, by D.L. Morrese, blends galaxy-style irreverent humor and fantasy with politics, court intrigue and sci-fi mystery. Although the mix, a fantasy sci-fi/humor blend, is occasionally odd, it's also largely seemless and works well. The characters are fresh and fun, the backstory is revealed at the perfect pace to intrigue readers, and the premise and essential problem-how to prevent a war between two countries-is both entertaining and compelling.

Although (probably) not intended for children, it's entirely appropriate for younger readers, with no profanity, minimal violence, no sex, and a great happy ending that leaves you with a nice little sigh.

My complaints with the manuscript are minimal-there are occasional copy-editing errors, and there are a few passages when the narrative runs into too much tell and not enough show. Even so, I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoyed the Warden Threat.

Overall Rating: 4.5 Stars. Fun and heartwarming fantasy/science fiction for all ages.

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique and enjoyable 2 May 2012
By WiLoveBooks - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I enjoyed this sequel to The Warden Threat, which I highly recommend. If you haven't read it, I would start there. This story continues where The Warden Threat left off, with Donald trying to avert a war. All of our favorite characters are back, as well as a new addition. Moe is fantastic, although Nash is the only one who really knows how funny he is. This book had a bit more of a sci-fi feel, as well as more emphasis on politics. It is fairly tense, because the country is about to go to war, but the humor from the first book is still there. I recommend this series if you are looking for something different. A great read!
