Mr Harding is Warden of Hiram's Hospital and precentor of Barchester Cathedral. His duties include the care of twelve old labouring men and organising music at the Cathedral. He lives with his daughter Eleanor whose young man, an ardent campaigner for good causes, becomes interested in the way the church administers its charitable wealth. To his horror, Mr Harding finds himself in the spotlight with the Jupiter (Times) writing leading article decrying his £800 annual income. This, they reckon, should be more equitably shared with the old men.
The story revolves gently around the Warden's battle with his conscience, his defiance of his strong-willed son-in-law, the Archdeacon, and the love story of his daughter Eleanor and her campaigning suitor, John Bold.
It is a quiet and moving tale which leads happily into the magnificent Barchester Towers, second in the series.
