Benny Goodman, not the kindest of judges, once said 'If Wardell Gray plays bop, it's great, because he's wonderful'. Well, he got that one right, because Wardell was wonderful. He was a tenor player out of Lester and Bird, but with a healthy dose of originality and the ability to swing at any tempo and in any circumstances.. He had a clear strong tone and could fashion shapely attractive lines. As a ballad player he was quite simply beautiful. He died young and in mysterious circumstances, tended not always to be in the right place at the right time careerwise and, although not forgotten, he doesn't seem to receive the attention he should do.
So, this box set is very welcome. All 4 C.D's are crammed full of good music.
C.D.1 has some tracks with the Earl Hines Orchestra, Wardell's first quartet session with Dodo Marmarosa, a track with Erroll Garner, a contingent from the Billy Eckstine band and 3 tracks with Howard McGhee.
C.D.2 has 'The Chase' with Dexter Gordon, some Sonny Criss live recordings, 2 tracks with Stan Hasselgard, quartet tracks with Al Haig, various Goodman small group and big band items, 3 Tadd Dameron tracks with Allen Eager and Fats Navarro and a quintet track with Eddie Bert.
C.D.3 has a quintet session with Al Haig and Jimmy Raney, some more Goodman, the famed 'Twisted' session with Al Haig and the later Detroit session, the Clark Terry sextet, and some Basie stuff, big band and septet.
C.D.4 has two separate sessions with Art Farmer and Hampton Hawes, a contingent from the Ellington band and another session with Dexter Gordon.
As you can see from the above the music varies from absolute classics to extreme rarities. There are no duds apart from the lumpy drumming of Tim Kennedy on the Sonny Criss tracks but Wardell, like the champ he was, just rides over that.
Proper provide an informative booklet and full detailed personnels. They deserve thanks for the time, trouble and expertise they have put into this.
