Book Description

H.G. Wells' 1898 novel, "The War of the Worlds," made people start to look at the sky in a whole new way—from over their shoulders. Written in a journalistic style, blending fantastic events with real-life locations and actual science of its day, Wells' novel chronicles the sudden Martian invasion of our planet Earth. "The War of the Worlds," and its realistic approach, launched a new, chilling genre of fiction and went on to inspire numerous variations and adaptations for radio, television, comics and film.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Classic Alien Invasion Tale 5 Oct. 2011
By M. Dowden HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE

Like most people I have lost count of how many times I have read this story over the years. This Vook edition contains both photos and illustrations, and if you are looking at this book on a colour screen device then you will see that these are in colour, as well as some black and white.

This has to be the most famous novel of alien invasion, with Martians coming to Earth in their tripod killing machines. Our narrator sees what is happening from his home, and then tells us all what he sees happening. At the time this book was considered more than just science fiction, but also a scathing indictment on Imperialism. Of course nowadays with laser guided missiles and what have you this can also be seen as an allegory of modern warfare, with death and destruction raining from the air by a faceless military. Because it can be read on more than one level this story never really ages and is just as enjoyable for a child reading it for the first time, to an adult reading it for the umpteenth time.

If you've never read this before then you have a real treat in store, and if you have read it before you will know how great this is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product 10 April 2013

There's no point in me rating the literature as it stands on its own as one of the greats so this review is for the Kindle product itself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Still scary! 22 Jan. 2015

You'd think that after watching so many apocalyptic movies in the last few decades, one would be immune to the terror of a classic like War of the Worlds. Think again. This is a truly chilling story, which still manages to instill real terror in the reader. Even though I knew the story well (having listened to Jeff Wayne's Musical Version countless times), the atmosphere Wells creates is terrifying and almost unbearable. Living in Surrey, the story also had a special effect on me, as I could easily imagine the destruction brought about by the Martians. Highly recommended!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not just a genre book but a great one 1 Jan. 2015
Like so many others I've seen the various film versions of this great tale, but nothing compares with the original book. I first read this in my early teens and could not put it down; now nearly forty years later I am still caught up in the "events" related. Together with Jules Verne, H G Wells is regarded as a father of science fiction but don't let any dislike of that genre put you off what might be called a "rollicking good read".

5.0 out of 5 stars Totally Prescient Science Fiction 2 Oct. 2014
Verified Purchase
This book (written over 100 years ago) is an amazingly prescient work of fiction. It was written before the invention of the aeroplane, motor cars, and wireless radio. Wells manages to incorporate many themes recognisable from the twentieth century, such as mass destruction, widespread panic and genocide.
