BBC Review

Waiting over a decade for a sequel to a seminal album is a risk that most artists refuse to take for fear of falling foul of Chinese Democracy Syndrome. Yet in the wake of Raekwon's 2009 sequel to his landmark Only Built for Cuban Linx, which won over many sceptics, more and more artists are peeking round the corner, waving their own personal part twos and hoping for the best.

The War Report, released in July 1997, was seen by many as marking the return of hardcore rap to the East Coast, containing as it did tales of real street-level crime and drug pushing. Arguably it pointed the way for the next wave of gangster rappers, who saturated the charts in the late 90s and early 2000s. Thirteen years is a long time to wait for a follow-up, however, and though there have been other CNN long-players, Report the War is the record that fans were always hoping would see the light of day. The pressure, most definitely, has been on the duo. But they’ve responded in admirable fashion.

Pain, featuring a beat by ever dependable Alchemist consisting of slow, booming drums, sets the blueprint for the album: no remorse in the lyrics, and pounding rhythms demanding that the listener pays attention. The calibre of guests appearing on the album doesn't harm the overall feel of the record either, with Raekwon lacing his revered drawl over Dutches v Phillies v Bamboo, The Oath (also featuring a strong Busta Rhymes verse) and The Reserves, one of the standouts thanks to the short, sharp melodies slapped over the drums.

An appearance from Faith Evans on Hood Pride serves to enhance the gravelly tones of her male counterparts. The opposite is true of the Avery Storm-guested The Corner, though, which stands out like a sore thumb as the singer lends his sub-standard Justin Timberlake vocals to proceedings, producing cringing of the highest order.

The beats might sound like they were made in the mid-90s, but whilst for most albums this would be seen as detrimental it works positively for CNN. While it won't set the world alight in 2010, The War Report 2 elevates them to the level they were at way back in the day. They should certainly be applauded for sticking to their guns and making the album their long-term fans have been craving for some time.

This album by CNN is incredible from the production by Tragedy Khadafi to the rhymes by Capone n Noreaga it's all classic material. The production has a grimey feel to it and there are Loads of top producers on here from Tragedy Khadafi to Havoc and Marley Marl. The rhymes are deep and constantly dope throughout the album there is not one weak track. Capone was locked down half way through making the album so Tragedy stepped up to fill his shoes and it worked perfectly, there are a few skits throughout the album where they are talking to Capone up north and it adds to the grimey feel of the album. There are a few guest spots from mobb deep but apart from that it's all CNN and Tragedy on the tracks. It's amazing to think that the Noreaga spitting on this album is the same rapper calling himself N.O.R.E today putting out generally weak material. There is not one track that I would say was better than another but personal favourites of mine are 'Live On Live Long', 'T.O.N.Y', 'Halfway Thugs' and 'Black Gangsta's'. I highly recommend this album to anyone into hiphop especially QueensBridge stuff and underground material this is an absolute classic up there with Illmatic, The Realness and Infamous get it now. Peace

If you are a real rap fan and you don`t have this or you are an avid rap fan wanting to get a taste of real hip hop you must get this album. This album and Illmatic literally layed the foundation on which rap is built. These two G`s complement each other well, Noreaga has a smooth classic rap tone and Capone has a crazy and exceptional rap voice and a unique flow that makes his tunes superior to the other mediocre rappers puting out weak rhymes. Also i feel CNN`s political message although CNN are far from all politics, check it out. This is definately a must have for any rap fan. 5 Stars Peace and love

Channel 10 Blood Sport 25 July 2005

Back in 1997 when shiny suit rap was taking over the hiphop music scene, a grimey duo from Queens NY, Capone-N-Noreaga dropped the street classic The War Report. The album is right behind other street classics such as Mobb Deep's Infamous, Raekwon's ..Cuban Link, and Nas' Illmatic. It boasts the buzz-gaining "L.A. L.A." w/ Mobb Deep and Tragedy, an answer record to the Dogg Pound's "NY NY". The production is straight raw beats provided by EZ Elpee, Buckwild, Lord Finesse, Clark Kent, Havoc from Mobb Deep, Marley Marl and Bay Boy Hitmen producers Nashiem Myrick & Carlos Broady, who produce The War Report favorites "T.O.N.Y." and "Driver's Seat". Also peep other War Report hits "Blood Money", "Stick You" & "Illegal Life". Noreaga isn't the best lyricist, having some decent verses and then having some bad ones through out the album. Since Capone is only on like half the songs since he got locked up while recording the album, Tragedy Khadafi take his place on some songs, providing relief to Noreaga's sometimes akward rhyming. A solid album none the less and I recommend it to anyone a fan of street rap like Nas, Mobb Deep, Wu-Tang.

THE CNN REPORT 3 Dec 2000
By "darkdragon2001" - Published on Amazon.com

This was Capone N Noreaga's debut. This came out before Capone was jailed. It is awesome. Both rappers have distinct styles. They are supported by great beat bangs and have written deep lyrics. A+

Noreaga's solo debut NORE was good too, but not as good as The War Report. It also has great lyrics and beats but something is missing without Capone. A

His second album, Melvin Flint Da Hustler, was weak. It had weak beats and lyrics, in addition to the lack of Capone. F

CNN are back now with The Reunion. It still isn't as good as The War Report, but the beats and lyrics are back and Capone fills the void again. A

I reccomend all the CNN and Noreaga album except Melvin Flint, especcially this stellar debut.

T.O.N.Y. 24 Sep 2000

Originally hailing from the East, and knowing real Hip-Hop when I hear it, CNN's the War Report is real Hip-Hop. This album was underestimated and definitely slept on by many. This album, which predates NORE's two mediocre (and commercial) follow-up solo projects, is without a doubt a classic. The lyrical content is fierce and the beats are hard-hitting, in other words, this album was produced very well and is evenly balanced. Creativity and well-executed cameos from Mobb Deep, Busta, and other NY cats made the War Report charismatic. Hopefully, the production on their upcoming sophomore effort "The Reunion" will not miss the mark, inspite of NORE's split from Tragedy a/k/a Khadafi of 25 to Life (whose label is now affiliated with Gee Street), who helped produce much of their first album. This underground masterpiece upholds the tradition of QB rap set forth by Nas the "Illmatic" (not to be confused with "Nastradamus") and the Infamous Mobb Deep. Noreaga needs Capone, like fish need gills to breathe under water. If their next album equals or surpasses the War Report, the Hip-Hop community will then realize why these cats are Top of New York! Just keep your fingers crossed that Capone doesn't get locked up again, so we won't have to be subjected to anymore NORE solo projects. This album is for people who appreciate true East Coast Hip-Hop music, and is not for the faint of lyric and void of comprehension. This album is for those who want to boycott some of the current weak music that's passing for East Coast Hip-Hop. What-What!
