This book has been available in a well known British book chain for the past week. I thoroughly enjoyed book 1 and thought I'd give this a go as well, especially as it was in a 3 for 2 offer. And I have to say, like book 1, it is really, really good.
Why am I surprised?
Well on the face of it the premise has been done before, admittedly not from the dwarves' point of view, but you know the score, lost child becomes great warrior/king and big stuff happens taking on the forces of evil. So far so ho hum. But somehow this works. There is a thread of humour sewn through the narrative and the characters are engaging - both the goodies and the baddies - and the plot rattles along. In fairness, the book doesn't claim to be anything it isn't. You could start a football chant along the lines of "You're fantasy genre and you know you are!" and the author couldn't complain. In fact with the recent trend towards more psychological and gorily realistic books in the fantasy world, it is nice to go back to the old school.
Just one more thing; the translation - unlike other books I have read recently - is spot on, so I don't know how much of the praise for this work is due to the original author or the translator but between them they do a darn fine job.
So to sum up, this is a proper fantasy page turner, an easy read from the old school and shouldn't be criticized for that as it is rather good.
