Don't be misled by the title of this album - only four of the titles are by a Strauss!
I used to have a 2-cassette tape version of this recording issued by MHS which I especially enjoyed because it includes lesser known and recorded waltzes by composers besides the Strausses. So I was thrilled to find it reissued on a Philips CD.
This marvelous collection includes such gems as Ivan Ivanovici's "Danube Waves", also recognizable as "The Anniversary Song", Franz Lehar's "Gold & Silver", Emil Waldteufel's immortal "Skaters Waltz", and Juventino Rosas' immediately recognizable classic "Over the Waves". In addition, there are waltzes by masters such as Carl Michael Ziehrer, Josef Lanner and of course three by Johann Strauss ("Vienna Blood", "Wine, Women & Song", "Voices of Spring") and "Dynamiden by Josef Strauss.
I can't imagine better Viennese Waltz playing than this by the Vienna Volksoper Orchestra conducted by Franz Bauer-Theussl. The 1980s recorded sound is very fine and appropriately lush for the most part and perhaps only slightly less so in the earliest. This is a bargain-label reissue so it has no program notes.
A MUST for lovers of the Viennese Waltz!
