The hero of this tale of adventure, chaos, love and lust is hilarious in the ways he seeks his fortunes. The language of the characters and the reckless bravery shown by them contrasts well with the all too real threats of life around them. Cook has been brilliant in his conjurement of an alternative world, making a decent fist of the past mixing with the present, with unexpected and gruesome results.

That's quite a claim.

Asimov, Donaldson, Herbert, Moorcock, etc, etc. Love them all.

But this towers above.

Epic? Yes. Hilarious? Yes. Gritty? Yes. Sad? Yes. Wondrous? Yes.

But the difference between this book and (since this is the best) all the rest is; it's sooooo real. There have been times I've been planning my holidays and I've thought "how about we go to...oh, yeah, that place is in a Hugh Cook book. Damn".

I'm truly saddened that HC passed away last year. It's selfish, I know, but I hope a chest full of unpublished W&W manuscripts are discovered. I hope he knew what he'd created.

p.s. If you're not willing to read (or can't get) the whole series, at least have Book 1 as a starter. It just makes this, the main course, that much more satisfying. But even on it's own, it's beyond a classic.

Perhaps the most popular volume in the 10-book series. Whilst not my favourite, this is a classic. The setting in unusual- a world that was once technologically advanced but now fallen into the decay of sword n sorcery. So is the tone - loads of funny tongue-in-cheek humour. Read all 10 and you'll be amazed at how well they blend together.

I'll make this brief. The book consists of the adventures of a group of pirates who have fallen on extreemly hard times. The hero is a young lad of 16 ... who end's up joining these pirates through a series of extreemly unlucky events. He stumbels from one life threatening disaster to another within the book, often with unexpected and hilarious results. It may sound very ordinary, standard fantasy fare, but I can assure anyone reading these comments that it is not ! This book is a never ending cyclone of unexpected events including : trechary, murder, magic, war, death stones, wizards, warriors, cowards, rape, orgies, animal cruelity, human cruelity, kidnapping, lies, inuendo, drunkenness, foul language and all the rest ! If you do not have this book ... then your fantasy collection is incomplete.

If you have read the other review of this book and are still not sure that you should buy this then you should know that you wiil be missing out on (in my opinion)the best fantasy writer who has ever put pen to paper. All ten of the books are inter linked with characters drifting in and out of each of the books. This is not the twee david eddings type fantasy world, this world is full of much more human faults and is better for it.Buy this book!

I've read tons of Sci-Fi and fantasy and this book is very special. I first read it when I was around 16 and I'm now 33. I've read it 5 or 6 times and the original book is so well thumbed that I've had to buy a new one! This is a swashbuckling page turner, absolutley hilarious, so involving with the main charachter being the archetypal anti-hero. But I am forever so disappointed at the ending - because it finished.
