Family relationships 19 Feb 2001
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
If you enjoy novels about family relationships, especially Mother/daughter, you'll be glad you found this one. This book made me pleased that I have grown closer to my mother during the last decade. However, it wasn't just that, that made it a comfortable read. It is quite atmospheric. The descriptions of the family house - the home - are very tangiable and easy to visualise and almost 'feel'. We also get the mother's past from her point of view as well as the present from the daughter's. This makes you realise what damage can be done in a moment, by a word or a disapproving look, and how we allow principles and pride, in relationships, to deny us happiness. We also get to share the mother's experience of her 'funny turns' as each small stroke builds to the one that sends her into a coma. This is dealt with sympathetically giving one an insight into how unnerving and confusing this must be. The sense of urgency to heal emotional wounds before time runs out permiates the story. Not wishing to give away the ending only allows me to say that this is not sentimentally unrealistic or too shallow either, leaving the reader to think about all the characters and what will happen after the novel.

"The Walled Garden" is the story of a woman who reconciles herself with her past at the time of her mother's death. It is a poignant, beautifully told novel. Set in the Dublin suburbs, it depicts the mother-daughter relationship with precision and conviction, while also painting an accurate, interesting picture of Irish life from the 1950s to the present.A tender but unsentimental story.

Although the narrative is sometimes weak and the plot not as layered as it could be, I still feel it is a shame this novel is now out of print. It is a tale we can all relate to - parents, children, spouses, siblings. The real beauty in the writing is its lack of sentimentalism, pity or regret. The characters are aware of their personal tragedy but do not allow us to wallow in feelings they refuse to contemplate themselves. I doubt anyone will remain untouched by this deceptively simple yet remarkably profound modern classic.
