From Amazon.co.uk

Arguably the biggest hit of the US 2010 television season, the apocalypse drama The Walking Dead pulls the zombie subgenre out of its overexposed doldrums and finds, ironically enough, the humanity and emotion beneath its rotting shell. Produced by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Gale Anne Hurd (Aliens) and based on the acclaimed graphic novel by Robert Kirkman, The Walking Dead follows a band of Atlanta-based survivors of a viral outbreak that has caused the dead to rise up and consume the living. The group's nominal leader is a sheriff's deputy (Andrew Lincoln) who wakes from a gunshot-induced coma to find the world in disarray and his wife (Sarah Wayne Callies, Prison Break) and son missing. His search for his family and the survivors' attempts to make sense of their lives in the wake of the outbreak is handled with intelligence and sensitivity, which helps to elevate the show beyond the grindhouse take on zombies, which favours spilled guts over character development. That's not to say that the blood doesn't flow plentifully here: the special effects are on par with zombie-movie mayhem, but again, they aren't the show's raison d'être. Solid performances, including Jon Bernthal as Lincoln's partner, Jeffrey DeMunn as the group's leading rationalist, and Michael Rooker and Norman Reedus as a pair of trouble-making rednecks, and gripping suspense make each of the first season's six episodes compelling from start to finish for both horror fans and those who dislike the genre as a whole.

The two-disc set of Walking Dead's first season includes all six episodes, as well as a number of making-of extras, including the show's conception and production, a talk with Robert Kirkman (he's a fan), a look at the makeup by KNB Studios, and the show's panel at the 2010 ComicCon. All of the principal players on both sides of the camera are given adequate screen time to discuss their vision for the show, its influences (George Romero, naturally), and the challenges of depicting the end of civilisation on a budget. --Paul Gaita

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Series-Shame About The Cuts! 25 May 2011
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I was very disappointed to learn that this DVD differs slightly to what was shown on TV.
Some scenes of violence have been cut (NOT by the BBFC I hasten to add) which is a great shame and
a let-down for many of the fans of this excellent series.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY UK release - Heavily Cut 22 May 2011
Format:DVD
The Walking dead is a marvellous 5-star show for any fan of the zombie genre.

But! Zombie-fans like their gore, and much or it has been removed from this DVD release.

If you want to see this show the way it should be seen, buy a Region 1 release, not this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW 29 Oct 2011
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Wow, this series has blown my mind, great charactors, great story and amazingly awesome zombies, very believable, acting is great.
I'm a huge zombie fan and often zombie movies get compared to the remake of Dawn of the Dead, not only do I believe the walking dead to be in the same league, but surpasses the previous bench marks, as a series it is afforded time to tell a real story and develop real charactors.
Blu-ray does the high budget and great make up justice, zombies are believable and detailed even in full HD
I can not wait for series 2, hopefuly we get more than 6 episodes
I give this 5 stars, not just based on it being great for the zombie genre but for its high quality compared with all genres.

5.0 out of 5 stars Censorship or not... 30 Aug 2011
By tuxide
Format:Blu-ray
... it is a marvellous story, and I can't wait to watch the follow-up. I have never been crazy about the Zombie genre, but The Walking Dead is really worth watching, times and times again. And yes, I am totally against cuts and censorship - it is a zombie film, for goodness' sake, what is with you people cutting the gore?! - but, even if ethically unorthodox (and I was lucky enough to enjoy the uncut version also), having a bunch of seconds less does not diminish the quality of the story, its tension, the depth of the characters' personal dramas.
If you want to watch good tv, you cannot miss this truly unique series.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Walking Dead 28 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
This series is by far and beyond the best DVD series I own in my collection. It feels like an HBO series, but I can find no evidence to confirm this, or that the HBO team were involved in its making... but to me, I`d be surprised if them didn`t have a hand in its production in some way.

The three disc set (which comes with a nice long documentary on the making of the series, and includes a lot of insight to its creation) is simply amazing; even if you don`t like the genre, it stands out as an excellent and intense drama in its own right.

I`ve heard it said the DVD series cuts out a lot of the blood and gore from the original series, and that customers should instead purchase a Region 1 copy to see everything in all its glory. But having watched the series first on Sky TV, I personally didn`t notice any cuts at all.

Absolutely excellent series and well worth the purchase.

I can`t wait for the second series to be made and to become available.

Steve :-)

5.0 out of 5 stars Love it! The Walking Dead! 15 Dec 2011
By Sparkes
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I told my daughter about this series, so here's her review below:-

I didn't have the sky channel to watch it as soon as it came onto tv, but i watched it on channel 5 with my mum and dad. I absolutely love this series, I think it's the best series that I've seen on tv! EVER! :)

I'd never heard of Andrew Lincoln until I saw him in this series, so his acting was really good. But I have to say my favourite character in this had to be Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus)!
I thought his acting was amazing and I thought the way he acted out the character was brilliant.

I can't wait until the second season comes out on DVD and absolutely loving it so far! :)

I have to give this series 5/5 (but it deserves much more than that!) :)

I watched the entire season, for the first time, a few days ago. I LOVED it! It was so good! The effects are great, the story is great, the acting is great... what's not to love? I can't wait for season two! Bring it on!

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid zombie series... if a little short 11 July 2012
Format:Blu-ray|Amazon Verified Purchase
Zombies seem to be the silver bullet at the moment - everywhere you look there is zombies (though luckily not in an apocalyptic sense). Whilst not called zombies in The Walking Dead, this is another example of an interesting take on the "zombie" future.

The AMC series is an emotionally driven take of the "zombie" outbreak, and anyone vaguely familiar with the comic series will see little nods to the early frames of the comics.

Much like Mira Grant's novels (Feed, Deadline: The Newsflesh Trilogy: Book 2 & Blackout: The Newsflesh Trilogy: Book 3), there are a few episodes with very little stereotypical zombie survival moments and this is a perfect weighting between the tense action, and the highly emotive scenes that exist elsewhere in the series.

There is a compelling end and unfortunately this is my only criticism; the series seems incredibly short by American standards and feels like there short be a few more episodes to flesh out the first series.

If you enjoyed Game of Thrones (Game of Thrones - Season 1 [Blu-ray][Region Free]) for it's story telling and compelling emotional scenes, but prefer your heroes
to be armed with projectiles and hunted by flesh hungry virus carrying hordes of the dead you will most likely enjoy The Walking Dead.
