Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead is a 'never-ending' dystopian Zombie survival horror, designed to satisfy the fan who has been left wondering what happens next after the credits have rolled in zombie-flicks. This is Book 5 in the series (as the title might suggest!) and collects issues #48-#60. Animated by Charlie Adlard, the series is entirely black & white, apart from the vivid and artistic covers of the original issues which are collected in the back of the books.
This book introduces a new Zombie threat - The Herd - where many zombies taking cues from each other start mindlessly walking together in a direction, accumulating more and more roamers and lurkers until they are a formidable size, effectively rendering static camps impossible to defend.
In Book #5, we find a wounded Rick and his son, Carl back on the road after having lost the prison, his hand and his wife to 'the Governor' at the end of #4. Initially it feels like we are just retracing our steps as they stumble back to Hershel's farm and find some of the old crew they left there the first time around; however the plot soon regains direction and pace and some new arrivals disclose that they may have a plan for the problem at hand. Is there a permanent solution? Time will tell....
Highly recommended for dystopia fans, zombie fans and graphic novel readers in general, a shining beacon for the genre!!
