BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Terry Brooks's The Measure of the Magic.

A new novel by Terry Brooks is always a cause for celebration. For more than twenty years, the New York Times bestselling author of the classic Shannara epic has proven himself one of the modern masters of fantasy, winning the hearts and minds of devoted readers around the world. In his last acclaimed novel, Ilse Witch, a brave company of explorers led by the last Druid, Walker Boh, traveled across unknown seas in search of an elusive magic. Yet perhaps Boh and his team were lured there for sinister, unforeseen purposes . . .

Now in Antrax, as the crew aboard the airship Jerle Shannara is attacked by evil forces, the Druid’s protégé Bek Rowe and his companions are pursued by the mysterious Ilse Witch. Meanwhile, Boh is alone, caught in a dark maze beneath the ruined city of Castledown, stalked by a hungry, unseen enemy.

For there is something alive in Castledown. Something not human. Something old beyond reckoning that covets the magic of Druids, elves, even the Ilse Witch. Something that hunts men for its own designs: Antrax. It is a spirit that commands ancient technologies and mechanical monsters, feeds off enchantment, and traps the souls of men.

With the Jerle Shannara under siege and Antrax threatening the bold and unwary, the Ilse Witch finds herself face-to-face with a boy who claims to be the brother she last saw as an infant. Now a young man, Bek wields the magic of the wishsong and carries the Sword of Shannara upon his back. Unsure whether to trust Bek or to slay him, the Ilse Witch takes him prisoner. One has come pursuing truth, the other revenge. Yet both seek Walker Boh–with the fate of the Four Lands hanging in the balance.

Return to the world of beloved novelist Terry Brooks, where creatures drift up from the earth like mist, a hypnotic song can kill, a sword can cut through a veil of lies–and one man, the true heir of an ancient magic, must choose between betrayal and redemption.

Having read all the shannara books I have to say that this is one of the darkest books of all the series. This could be due to the fact that Terry Brooks has effectively managed to merge fantasy with the technology that the world is developing today. As a result you are able to identify to a greater extent what the characters are facing.The book also offers good development of the characters, particulaly between Bek and Truls Rohk, and ends with a great cliffhanger.Antrax has a touch of the Matrix in it supplimented by enough of the usual Shannara magic to keep you totally entranced.A must.

Absorbing 20 Nov 2003
Format:Hardcover
In this sequel to his wonderful Ilse Witch, author Terry Brooks continues the adventures of the crew of the Jerle Shannara. With the party sundered, each member must fend for him or herself. The seemingly all-powerful opponent that they face is given a name: Antrax. A creation of the Old World, it exists everywhere and nowhere at all; how can Walker defeat it? Bek confronts his sister, but she has long been wrapped in lies for so long, how can he reach her?

This book is even better than the first book of the series. Where that one laid the groundwork, this one built on it. The story is gripping, screaming along to the final page. Getting more and more enthralling with each page, it left me truly frustrated that I have to wait another year for the next chapter!

This is a great book, absorbing, with a fascinating storyline. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

His best work yet 23 Aug 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Terry Brooks has done it again. In fact, he's bettered himself again!

Antrax (which I only finished reading about half an hour ago) has taken the world of Shannara and has pit it against a completely new adversary. The meld of futurism and fantasy is perfectly pitched, and it had me on the edge of my seat several times!

I have religiously read every single one of the Shannara series in order, and this is most likely the best. It draws upon magic that we already know about (the Wishsong, the Sword of Leah, and the Druid Magic) and blends it with some new, interesting people and then drops the whole lot into a completely unfamiliar environment.

I've already pre-ordered the next book, but I'm going to be waiting on my doorstep for it to be delivered!

I know you hate yourself for how you are. I know you hate how you look and how you know others will look at you if you reveal yourself. But sometimes, with people who matter, you have to reveal even the worst of what you believe yourself to be. You have to have faith that it wont make a difference. I would never judge you for how you look. Who you are is what matters, and who you are is always buried deep inside. "e;
