Adventures of the man who invented the modern canoe 21 Aug 1997
By Charles Hall - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a highly readable account of the author's solo voyage across the English Channel to France and up the Seine. Although he sails in a small sailboat here, MacGregor invented the modern canoe, and spent his life promoting the canoe and other outdoor sports. This is a fun book, especially for small boat sailors
A Beautifully Crafted Little Tale 13 Feb 2012
By David Baker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
A great read for any solo sailor, small craft enthusiast, or lover of nautical history. The author is a hoot, by Victorian/Edwardian wit standards and his gentlemanly writing gait stands in wonderful contrast with his dealings within a medium (sailing) that lends itself to getting dunked, bruised, sleep deprived, and at the mercy of elements daily. The wood prints are delicious, the descriptions of his craft are a glimpse at a standard that changed the yachting world. His moralist ramblings become a tad repetitive for non christians, but come from the right place and remain worthy of inclusion. One bit of advice for the reader: Skip the intro/bio until after you have enjoyed the title at face value, knowing the details in the "prelude" should wait until his strange little tale is complete as they are full of over educated opining and assumptions about a personality that was never encountered in person by the commentator.
From London to Paris and Back in a Canoe 19 Oct 2010
By Theseus - Published on Amazon.com
A publicity stunt!

This entry in the Mariners Library (#24) is notable because MacGregor made his 1867 voyage from London to Paris in order to promote his canoe design. MacGregor was a great 19th century marketer, seeking royal patronage for his 21 foot yawl which was one of the great forerunners of the modern canoe.

First Thus, baby blue cloth over boards with navy details in dustjacket; 214 pp with a few illustrations.
