Haunting reminder 12 Nov 2007
By Pie
Format:Paperback
THis book should be read by anyone, especially politicians, who seem to forget the true suffering of war. This collection of diary entries are hard hitting, touching and a real reminder of the insanity of war. Read this book.

Many years ago, long before I was an oranje in my Daddy's eye, and even longer before I met my smoking buddies Johan and Johann, the Dutch and the English were at war with each other. Medway. Chatham. Some other places I can't recall after an afternoon's toking. But in WW2, the English came to our rescue. OK, it was four years after the Deutsche had invaded us, so come on now guys, what took you so long? But better late than never, eh? And this book does justice to the epic scale of that conflict. I extend to the authors, Owen Walters and James Guy, an open invitation to visit me in Utrecht, where I (in the company of Johan and Johann) will be happy to show our gratitude for your nation's help during the war. Come on now. So much fun we'll be having already.

Useful vignettes 17 Feb 2012
Format:Paperback
I bought this book because it was cheap, and I got it wrong so bought it twice and gave away the second copy.

Both of us found it a useful book full of vignettes of a reasonable length. A very useful book for those odd gaps between something else (how I read it) and interesting from cover to cover as my friend read it. Helpfully the book references a lot of its sources so anyone interested in just one part/person can soon drill down in greater depth. It always amazes me that the publishing industry doesn't do more of these as "tasters" for the rest of their catalogues.

The anecdote, by David Niven Niv: The Authorised Biography of David Niven, about Guy Gibson didnt make my book ( Heroes of the RAF - Guy Gibson VC (Hereoes of the RAF) book Heroes of the RAF - Guy Gibson for space grounds but was an amusing story showing the human side of the war also. The range of extracts was interesting and varied
