This "Best of" double CD offers 32 arias and duets sung by the young countertenor Philippe Jaroussky, in a collection, obviously chosen by the singer himself, which includes some of the most beautiful arias from his last decade of work. The album also gives 6 new highly interesting arias which Jaroussky hadn't found another opportunity to publish, some of which were recorded especially for this collection, obviously as a bonus gift from the singer to his audience. Here we find Handel's "Ombra mai fu" and "Venti, turbini", as well as Porpora's "Alto Giove" and Purcell's "Music for a while" (which Jaroussky also sang in concerts last year).

The new recording demonstrate that this highly gifted singer has developed his voice and singing even further in the last few years - his tone is possibly even more pure and sweet than before in the highest register, his coloratura, always legato, of a stunning accuracy. As impressive are Jaroussky's always authentic and sincere expression of the content of the music, his wide spectrum of voice colours, his perfect phrasing or his impressive musicality.
The selection on this album gives everything from arias by Rossi and Bassani rediscovered by Jaroussky, via treasures by Caldara, J.C. Bach and others, of course favourite arias by Vivaldi ("Vedro con mio diletto", "Sento in seno") and Handel ("Scherza infida" and the breathtakingly sweet "Mi lusinga"), to pieces by Hahn, Fauré and other newer composers. It also includes church music by a variety of composers, including Monteverdi and Sances ("Stabat Mater").

Of course all the ensembles, the singers in the duets (especially the sweet voiced Nuria Rial) and the acoustical quality of this CD are excellent.

This is a summation of Jaroussky's ten-year career so far, during which he has performed alongside many talented singers (like Cencic, with whom he sings a sensuous duet by Bononcini), orchestras and ensembles. The double CD exhibits 26 of his best recordings , taken from an already huge discography, and 6 new ones, like Rossi's Orfeo. Other pieces he has wanted us to discover are Sances' throbbing Stabat Mater (with Artaserse) and Mattioli's Ave Regina. He specialised initially in the Baroque repetoire for castrati, like Bach's energetic and bravura aria from Orfeo and his Sentimi which seems to anticipate the uplifting arias of Mozart. He commences with a new recording of Porpora's (Farinelli's teacher)melancholic Alto Giove, in which his voice is so youthful and lustrous.Vivaldi's Tito Manlio, Ercole and Pianti all brilliant examples of Jaroussky's acrobatic and nimble coloratura, requiring the stamina and pace of an athlete. A new recording from Handel's Serse (Ombra ma fu) opens CD2 - a tingling rendering of one of his most solemn and moving pieces, matched by Jaroussky's luminous singing of Mi lusinga(Alcina) and the expressive and tender phrasing of his Scherza infida from Ariodante. Vivaldi's Vedro con (Giustino)is justly juxtaposed with Alto Giove, showing him as the equal of Handel in the undulating, melodic line, apparent again in Vivaldi,s Olimpiade. The new recording from Handel,s Rinaldo is a dazzling exhibition of Jaroussky's vocal pyrotechnics, displayed again in Caldara's agitated Temistocle and Adriano. The latter contrast with the quiet , lilting delivery of Tutto fa from his Ifigenia - all of which Jaroussky has helped us discover. He is also very at home in the seicento of Monteverdi and offers us a new recording of his Laudate with tantalising orchestral accompaniment.Read more ›

Good value for money in that you get a beautiful voice and lots of it, as there are many hours of listening. I gave this to my parents who love classical music but did not hear of Philippe Jaroussky. They were amazed.

Until I heard M. Jaroussky on Cecilia Bartoli's Mission CD, I had only heard of him by name and repute. What a voice! Gorgeous, full voice that sends shivers down the spine. This impelled me to buy the download version of this 'best of' set. That did my bank account no good, for since then I have bought all his cds & dvds!
This is a showcase, par excellence, but beware if you buy, for your purse will soon be lighter, for you not be able to resist buying his other recordings! What the hell; buy, already...
