5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent box, but is there a market? 14 Aug 2014
Verified Purchase
An excellent value, compact box set.
There's no booklet, just picture sleeves for the albums and a handful of (one sided) repros of single covers.
As far as I know, only Metamatic uses a newer master than the 2007/8 Edsel 2CD sets this box is clearly derived from.
Almost all the tracks from those sets are reproduced here (the fifth CD wraps up most of the extras not on the album discs).
The three exceptions are;
Miles Away (alternative version)
Endlessly (extended mix)
Running Across Thin Ice With Tigers (extended mix)
A good value box, but to be honest most of the fans will have the previously mentioned Edsel sets and I'm not sure many others would be interested.
A pity as there's lots of great, overlooked music herein.

4.0 out of 5 stars To relive some great music from the early 80s 3 Sep 2014
Verified Purchase
I big fan of Ultravox back in the late 70s and early 80s, I was only able to see the band once. I was living in New York, and they played a small club on the Vienna tour. I really wish I had seen them with John Foxx, because the music was so much better in the first three albums.

In the early 80s, I bought all of John Foxx's solo stuff - LPs and singles - and I still have some of them, but I don't listen to vinyl any more. I did have the first two albums - Metamatic and The Garden - on CD, but they were poorly mastered.

So I was delighted to spot this release, which includes his first four solo albums, plus a collection of alternate takes and b-sides. It's interesting to listen to this music now. Sure, it sounds totally 80s, yet it doesn't sound dated like a lot of music from those early electro-pop years. There are lots of great songs, b-sides that I remember almost wearing out when I played the singles back in the day, and some alternate versions that are great to hear (but not necessary). At the price - only £16 when I bought it here - it's a steal.

Essential John Foxx collection. A fan of the 80s who does not own it is missing out by not owning this great package.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Value for Money! 19 Aug 2014
By Alexander Haas - Published on Amazon.com
While this is packaged in much the same way as many recent low-budget "Complete" box sets, Virgin Years comes close to being a properly comprehensive box set.

As can be gathered here and elsewhere, you will find Metamatic, The Garden, The Golden Section and In Mysterious Ways along with a fifth CD, Fusion/Fission included. All are encased in a clamshell box with some high quality printing on the exterior. The discs are housed in cardboard envelopes that are of decent thickness and with high quality printing on each. No booklet or credits are included (which is a shame), but what IS included are several CD liner note sized cards that reproduce the artwork of several period singles. An odd inclusion, but a neat collectors' piece.

Now, the real question is: will this set be worth it to those who have already collected the 2008 2-disc editions of these albums? As near as I can tell, the answer is a resounding "no." You already have everything included here.

The real fun is for people who missed out on some or all of the 2008 editions. As of this writing, the 2008 edition of In Mysterious ways is going for multiple hundreds used and ALL of the album and bonus cuts from that edition are present here. In fact, given a quick scan, there are only three tracks from the four 2-disc 2008 editions NOT included either on the relevant album disc or on the bonus disc. For the curious, the absent tracks are:

-Miles Away (Alternate Version) from The Garden
-Running Across Thin Ice with Tigers (Extended Version) from The Golden Section
-Endlessly (Extended Mix) from The Golden Section

If you're a true completist, both of these editions are still in print and can be purchased to supplement this release, but as you'd need to skip a few car payments to pick up In Mysterious Ways, that makes this set an immense value.

There are a few surface gripes in that a proper set with jewel cases and a booklet would have been appreciated. Additionally, some may bristle at the bonus tracks now falling at the end of the disc for the relevant album (the 2-disc editions had the album on disc 1 and the bonus cuts on disc 2). Still, those aside, this is a great value-for-money set and fills a huge gap in the Foxx catalog with his fourth album now being otherwise out of print in its remastered form.

Highly recommended for anyone who has none, or even just one or two of his recent remasters.

Since this will be cut off in the Amazon view, I'll attach the track listing for the curious:

4.0 out of 5 stars To relive some great music from the early 80s 3 Sep 2014

Since I never bought the earlier re-releases, this is a perfect set to have, and it reminds me how much great music John Foxx made back in the day.
