When my mother gave me this book as a leaving present I did at first feel a little skeptical of its promises... well the title had a lot to live up to. However, having poured over this book during my train journey up to Manchester I kind of got the impression that this book had been written from experience rather than to simply make a fast buck. The sections are clear, the information useful and honest. I loved the section on Hedonism!
I especially liked the section on housing. Being a student and leaving home for the first time I found the information invaluable.

This is the one time my mother got it right. I think they should give it out on fresher's week.

I bought this for my little bro (off to uni) and won't be giving it to himuntil well after the event as i chuckle and chortle my way though thewhole thing.
Simply put it is a list of all the scams and blags that it took the likesof me and my mates three years to work out, tidily organised into oneconcise book. During the dark days of cash-flow problems (which tend toresemble the hoover dam)known as university, this seems like anindispensible aid to keeping your head above water in a variety of (legal)ways.
Since its not from the library there is a chance that they will actuallyread it well before the third year. I can only sit and be jealous of thisyears fresh crop of first years as they sit smug in the knowledge thattheir ride through the first tumultuous years of post-home life will be assmooth as... well picking up a book and reading it.

Bought this book for my second daughter who will be off to uni this year. It is crammed full of advice on just about everything you can possibly imagine you might need to know and more, from advice on accommodation, student loans, jobs - everything and anything. On looking through it, my older daughter who left for uni two years ago said 'gosh mum, what a useful book - wish you had got this for me, would have helped me out with all sorts of things!'

Bought this for our son who - all being well with A level results - is hoping to go to Uni this Autumn. He found the title amusing and appropriate! Also found the info inside relative - makes a serious life choice a little more bearable!

I found this book a few weeks ago and found it pretty useful. The sections are clear and there's a no nonsence approach to the guide. It's a little bit shorter than I expected, but does give good advice throughout. There is quite a good section on housing that gives good contact infomantion and advicew on what to do in specific situations. I'm off to university this September and feel a little more oragnised after reading this book.

This book gave the most comprehensive guide to life as a student that I have come across in my travels and was an instant buy when I sent my first child off to university. My second child is off to university again this year and I will be buying another copy for her too.

This survival guide told me all I needed to know about uni. I'm glad I read it before going unlike some of my friends who were kicking themselves when they read it a few terms into their degrees. Invaluable advice :) A must buy for anyone going to university

To be honest, if you are seriously considering university than from a financial aspect as well as accomodation etc etc you are already going to know about 85% of what is featured in this book. Which is dissapointing as any clued-up yet paranoid person is going to buy this thinking they will stumble upon something new and profound which they will be glad to know. Sadly this only refreshed what ive had bombarded into me by a whole host of other sources so i guess a mature student or someone returning to education would appreciate this more and be able to make better use of the contacts and general info. Other sections on STD's and how to use a condom were a bit assuming and quite frankly uneccessary in my view. We all have life experience and went to school where we received countless sex ed classes so things like this just aren't helpful. You could argue that content was needed to make this book relatively bigger as in general its quite short. In all, good but not great - there are better books out there which are less try hard and more informative. Give those a go first.
