Book Description

25 Jan 1996

Some of the extraordinary women whose writings are including in this collection are observers of the world in which they wander; their prose rich in description, remarkable in detail. Mary McCarthy conveys the vitality of Florence while Willa Cather's essay on Lavandou foreshadows her descriptions of the French countryside in later novels. Others are more active participants in the culture they are visiting, such as Leila Philip, as she harvests rice with chiding Japanese women, or Emily Carr, as she wins the respect and trust of the female chieftain of an Indian village in Northern Canada. Whether it is curiosity about the world, a thirst for adventure or escape from personal tragedy, all of these women are united in that they approached their journeys with wit, intelligence, compassion and empathy for the lives of those they encountered along the way.

Features writing from Gertrude Bell, Edith Wharton, Isabella Bird, Kate O'Brien, Lady Mary Wortley Montagu and many others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Virago Book of Women Travellers 26 July 2012

Fascinating insight into the way women broke the ties that bound them in the 18th - 19th centuries. Good stories, makes one think about our lives today and how we need to reconnect with some of the characters in the book, Well worth a read,

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't be put off by the word 'Women' 19 May 2013
The Virago Book Of Women Travellers

This is a marvellous read, with extracts (some quite short, others considerably longer) from books written by women either travelling alone at a time when this was considered outrageous or with their husbands and/or children. Some literally went everywhere, and Lady Mary Barker's account of travelling with New Zealand bush-rangers is particularly interesting (and very well-written). So, too, is a seventeen-year-old's tale of how she fled from her husband in order to travel the world with her banjo. But reading part of Anna Leonowen's heart-rending memoir of her work in Siam will mean that for most of us that film will never be the same again. All of which made the later female travellers, those who can now roam the world as they wish, slightly less interesting. I have no hesitation, however, in recommending this collection.
