By Alex J
This book excels in providing clear, sensible information on selecting a puppy or rescue dog. It was also great to see a chapter on breed/type specific training - too many training books overlook the fact that different breeds have different motivations. The only real downside is where the author gets in a muddle over learning theory & clicker training, but there are so many great books that cover this aspect that it isn't such a big deal. Overall, there is plenty of food for thought in here for both new dog owners and more serious training enthusiasts alike.

1.0 out of 5 stars ancient techniques: STAY WELL CLEAR! 8 Sep 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
What a disappointment - you just wish this writer had read more of the recent science behind dog training and behaviour. Some of advice dished out is truly unbelievable and so old style and counter productive it beggars belief.

If you are looking for a training book or something sensible, or something to deepen your bond with your dog please do not buy this... Instead look for something written buy Patricia B McConnell, Alexandra Horowitz or John Bradshaw In Defense of Dogs

Counter serving solution: go to a joke shop and get something called a "detonator"!!! "Don't worry it won't physically hurt your dog - it just make a loud bang" Etc etc

Another "highlight" includes start posting envelopes with chilli powder in them if your dog shreds post!

Written in 2010 feels like it could have been a century ago - when will people start respecting their animals and train with kindness.

I couldn't even finish it

*Deep sigh*

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for all dog owners and trainers 23 Jan 2010
Having been on several of the author's courses I have seen him working with dogs first hand. This book comes really close to explaining the art of communicating with your dog, in simple and easy to understand language, as if you were really there and watching his demonstrations in person.
This is the alternative to the many other books available that all seem to tell you the same thing (such as the clicker guides and treat training manuals!!)
This book is easy to dip into or tackle head on, whichever takes your fancy, or you can use it as a reference book or problem-solver.
It's well worthy of a place on your bookshelf.

5.0 out of 5 stars All you need to know about training your dog 2 July 2011
By Yvonne
Yet another insightful and often humorous book by the man who really does get inside the minds of dogs. His understanding of how our canine friends think and behave makes him one of the world's leading canine behaviourists. Stop thinking about walking in circles in a hall and start thinking about interacting with your dog in a meaningful and mutually beneficial way in real life environments. John Rogerson leads you through the steps required to elicit the very best from your dog, from walking on the lead without pulling, to dealing with some of the behaviours we may wish to change, such as barking at the postman. In summary, this book is for those who want a well behaved family pet and who seek to understand better the workings of the canine mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Easy and straightforward 9 May 2011
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. It was interesting and straightforward. Having read numerous dog training books over the years I wasn't too sure if this would be any different, but it was. It gives a much better understanding of dogs without being too technical or boring. I particularly liked the chapter on training specific breeds as it gives an insight into breeds that I wouldn't go out my way to read about, but now have a better understanding of their behaviour - very useful for when I meet them in the woods/park minus their owners! I wish I'd read this book early on in my dogs life and would thoroughly recommend that anyone about to train a dog should read this before they start.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is something I have been looking for 12 Jan 2011
By Kasia
This is one of the best, if not the best dog training and canine behavior book I have read so far. I have found it very insightful and unbelievable interesting. I bought it after reading the library copy, as I think it is worth to be on every dog trainer shelf. It gives solutions to uncommon problems and touches the subjects which are not in any other book. I wish the author would write separate book for each chapter of that amazing book.

4.0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK 13 Dec 2010
I recently took a seminar with John Rogerson. It was one of the best 3 days I have ever spent. I couldn't wait to get home and order this book. I have not read the whole thing yet, but he has so many real life solutions and I love his approach to dog psychology. I highly recommend reading this book. You will not be disappointed.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Dog Vinci Code 28 Jan 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The dog Vinci Code was a bit long winded. Like many other dog training books this one had a blinkered view of dog training. One way fits all. Driving off and leaving your dog behind, albeit with a minder, to show the dog that it must come when called was, I felt, a bit naive.
