Product Description

The Vikings! Aelswyn had heard about them, all the tales of their barbaric behavior, the rapes and pillages, the massacres, the burnt villages. But she never thought they would dare to attack her father's stronghold. And that they would succeed...

Do you like your history with a pinch of adventure and a zest of romance? Then this book is for you.
Set in tenth century England, this story will draw you back to ancient times, where life was uncertain and passions were burning. At the end of the Dark Ages, men fought for honor, land and wealth, and did everything with excess. Women struggled through feuds, raids, disease and famines. Love was rare and precious, hard to find, and easy to lose. And worth going to war for.

Published on Wattpad as an unedited draft, The Viking's Hold received more than nine million reads worldwide, and the Wattpad Most Read award in the Historical Fiction category.

Out of seven thousand comments, the most frequents were:

"I didn't sleep last night, I couldn't stop reading..."

"I love how realistic the characters are for the time frame..."

"Thank you for putting so much efforts in the research, it truly shows..."

"I always thought history was boring, not anymore..."

"I feel as if I were there..."

5.0 out of 5 stars Buy it or lose out! 1 Jan. 2015

I was introduced to this work in first draft form on Wattpad and when I found it here on Amazon I didn't hesitate to buy it and add it to my kindle library. I love the easy way J Vernis writes, spinning the reader into the past and making them at home instantly...something that can only be achieved with a thorough understanding of the period in question.
I approached the book at first with trepidation as so often books tackling the subject of Viking incursions into England are full of wildly inaccurate information and are sold on the basis of rather cheap violence and sexual content. I was overjoyed to find this was not the case with this book. Don't get me wrong, the book contains violence, sexual attraction, passion and love, but everything is handled with the fine touch of a skilled author and never felt voyeristic or cheap to me. In fact I became entirely engaged in the love story at the heart of the book, worried for the characters and am hoping for more books to follow this one.

In some ways the writing reminded me of Elizabeth Chadwick's more skilled works, but J Vernis has a voice all her own. The book is well researched, lyrical and easy to fall into and forget the world with. Vernis' main characters are complex and interesting and the plot moves energetically with quite enough surprises to keep the reader energized.
The only criticism I have really is of the cover, which I just don't think does justice to the quality of the book within.

I recommendation not only that you read this book, but that you keep an eye on the emerging talent in my book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A well thought out book. 16 July 2014

A brilliant book. Read this before it was published and just bought it now to keep.
The characters are strong, well thought out and realistic. History is not bent to suit the needs of the book. The plot is interesting until the end and you definitely become invested in the characters.
I loved the fact that the female characters are not pitiful but extremely strong like most women would of needed to be at that time in history to survive.

Been reading the book from time to time as it was being written and the finished product is just a brilliant read written by an obviously brilliant writer. I look forward to starting it again on my tablet and reading it right through to the end. Every good fortune to the author and I hope she makes her fortune soon.
