Product Description

Product Description

Far from being just 'wild, barbaric, axe-wielding pirates', the Vikings created complex social institutions, oversaw the coming of Christianity to Scandinavia and made a major impact on European history through trade, travel and far-flung consolidation. This encyclopedic study brings together the latest research on Viking art, burial customs, class divisions, jewellery, kingship, poetry and family life. The result is a rich and compelling picture of an extraordinary civilisation.

About the Author

Else Roesdahl is Reader in Medieval Archaeology at the University of Arhus, Denmark and special Professor in Viking Studues at the University of Nottingham. In 1988 she was awarded the Soren Gyldendal Prize for the Danish edition of THE VIKINGS.

This must rate as one of the best introductions to the Viking era ever written. It covers the basics of all aspects of Viking society from use and problems of sources of evidence, through dress, language and literature, social and politcal structures, religion, ending with the Viking expansion. All the subjects are in concise and easy well titled chapters of around four pages long. After reading this introduction you would be well prepared for either advancing onto more detailed and specialised papers and books, or the information gained would give you a good understanding of the age from a general knowledge perspective.

This book is wonderful, not only does it tell about the important deterministic aspects of the Viking age. But it also tells you the smaller aspects such as the colthes they wore and they brooches they created. I have read many viking books and never before been so interested in what the historian ad to say.

This is a really good book if you want some basic knowledge on a lot of different topics within the viking topic.
The author clearly knows her vikings, and although some statements are not entirely accurate, not much archaeology is.

You get to learn about ships, politics, religion, trade, cultivation, travelling and much, much more.
I would recommend this book to people interested in vikings - but with only little or a basic knowledge about vikings.
