Book Description

What would you do if you discovered nothing was as you thought, and the fate of your friends, perhaps even the world was in your hands?

That’s the reality Peter must face in this award-winning middle Grade novel, The Viking’s Apprentice.

Campbell’s Cove is a small town surrounded in mystery and intrigue. The history of the Cove tells us of dragons, trolls, goblins and the evil Master who stole children, livestock and, strangest of all, eggs from the Cove every year. Aided by the hideous monster, Tolldruck there seemed no stopping their evil plan.

That was until, centuries ago, a Viking warrior came to Campbell’s Cove and vowed to rid it of all evil, and claim the prize offered by the mysterious church elders. The Viking succeeded and everything returned to normal. The evil was gone, and Campbell’s Cove was safe again… Until now.

Voted #1 'Smart Novels to Read Your Kids'

When Peter and George visit Peter’s Granddad’s amazing mansion in Campbell’s Cove for the summer holidays they had no idea it would change their lives forever. Deep beneath them in the caves of the Cove an evil has returned, an evil which threatens to destroy everything they believed to be true about the world.

Peter must learn who he really is, and what he must do to save the children of the Cove. Together with George and his Granddad they go on a journey that reveals secrets, test friendships and confronts their biggest fears. Can Peter save the children? Can the Master be stopped? Find out in The Viking’s Apprentice.

More About the Author

I was born and raised in Scotland. To be precise I was born in Hamilton in 1975. (a year my oldest daughter thinks is close to around the time Vikings invaded Britian; that's how old her dad is.) Then when I was very young we moved to Dunblane where I spent most of my years until I was roughly 20. After some traveling around I have landed back in Hamilton with my wife Kathleen and our two amazing daughters. They do say you always go back to where it all started one day.

Having had two personal brushes with death; both far too early in my life if you are asking for my opinion. I decided it was time to follow my dreams, not be afraid anymore and let my creative side out.

I have always loved writing and have written many short stories. One day I will publish these stories (re-written and tidied up of course) for everyone else to read. I knew in my heart that I wanted to write a novel and I had many ideas competing to be first out the hat.(I have to wear a hat these days, I am bald and it gets cold in Scotland) I did write a book, as yet untitled, but chose not to release it after I had the idea for The Viking's Apprentice. This new idea grabbed me and I began writing. Inspired by my daughters and especially my oldest who loves to read. I wanted to write a story they could read and enjoy sooner rather than later. A story aimed at younger readers, but that could be enjoyed by everyone.

Two years of hard work, re-writes, edits and learning about the industry came to fruition when the Viking's Apprentice was released on Amazon on March 28th 2013.

I am so thankful for everyone who helped and supported me throughout the creation of The Viking's Apprentice. I am grateful for the new friends I have met on the journey.

My proudest moment as an author so far came when a school teacher contacted me to say that my book, The Viking's Apprentice, had inspired a 10 year old non reader to begin reading. This child went from hating reading time and not joining in to looking forward to it and being unhappy on days when my book was not being read. I have since had the chance to visit that school and speak with the teacher and all the children who read my book. A great experience for me and one that I am very grateful for.

I am currently working on book 4 in the Viking series and trying to convince my daughter that I am not 'ancient'. I have a feeling book 4 will be finished long before my daughter is convinced that 38ish is not old!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic 31 Mar. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'll be honest. I wasn't expecting much from this book. It's really not my thing and not a genre I tend to read, the artwork on the cover is nice. I found this author when I opened up my Rebbie Reviews twitter account and thought I'd give it a whirl.

So, what did I think? Well it seemed a little strange, the book opens with vikings and then the next thing you know you're in a school at the end of term. I figured it'd be some little boy's wild imagination or a school project. Peter, our main character is going to spend the summer at his grandad's house in Campbell's Cove. Then the book really gets going! This is a story like none I've ever read, it's got everything from kids to vikings to witches, trolls and talking bears!

Aimed at older children and young adults, it's fun for a wide range of people including those who are fans of the genre, it's well written with good description but still allowing that bit of artistic license for the reader. It's easy to read and I could not put this book down, by mid way through I was completely hooked and excited to see what would happen next.

I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone but any of you guys with young teens? Get this book to them!

9/10

Kevin's next book is in the works now and I for one, cannot wait to read it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 27 April 2013
By Amy
Format:Kindle Edition
As soon as I read the plot I went hunting for this book. When I realised it was an ebook only I downloaded the necessary apps and away I went head first. This is an excellent book, just as it looked like it would be. What McLeod does is he has created a world of mystery and magic within our own and even in this first book, for even as I read I could tell there would be a second, is he has engaged readers. He uses stories of an ancient time, seemingly simple, but with so much hidden meaning and history behind it, to reveal the past, explain a story and begin an adventure. However it is the way in which he does this is what was wonderful: by using characters to do the work for him he enables readers to learn alongside the children as they too hear the wild adventures of the past, hearing tales of heroics of Vikings and warriors, dragons and battles.

The story begins with Peter and his friend George going to stay with Peter's Grandad at Campbell's Cove for the holidays. We learn that Peter does this often and what we know of Grandad is he is a teller of stories, stories about the Cove's history, rich in dragons, warriors, and witches. The descriptions in this story are wonderful, but it also allows the reader to create their own images. The images created as you read Grandad's stories to the boys about when dragons were fought and villages were under threat are excellent. In so few words seemingly complete stories can be told. This is another clever trick by McLeod; readers are given the same position as the children in the beginning, we, as they, sit impatiently while Grandad recounts his stories. This is where our knowledge comes from and we must wait, unless you start speculating like I did, but McLeod gives nothing away until you and the children need to know.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVED IT!!! 21 Jan. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought the 2 books in the series for my 8 year old. He is a typical boy and has to be prompted to read. He has never been a "harry Potter" fan and preferred Dairy of a wimpy kid and gangster granny type books. He loves Vikings and mystery type adventures so thought this would capture his imagination.

Well forget my son...I loved it! The books are well written, full of adventure and the characters and settings very easy to imagine.

As for my son he found them easy to read as the layout of the book is a slightly larger print and the line spacing makes it less daunting for young or less confident readers.

This writer is one to watch. If you struggle to get your kids to read...buy this. They will love it!

Cant wait for the next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous 7 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
I loved this book. I'm a primary teacher and am sure the pupils in my class would enjoy it too! It would really help ignite their imaginations, it is a true adventure story with the setting, characters and plot needed to keep you thoroughly engaged. It reminds me of the fun adventures I used to read and reenact when I was younger. The Viking's Apprentice is certainly more fast paced and thrilling than some of the more traditional adventure series. It does however give you the warm feeling of comradery which children relate to and often refer to when using their own imaginations. I feel this successful combination makes it suitable for both boys and girls to enjoy- oh and adults of course too!

Fantastic book to read.
The book starts off with two young boys going to their grandad's house for a simple holiday at the end of school term. This simple holiday soon turns into an adventure neither them or the reader will forget, which contains ,vikings, witches and a talking bear!
The way the story is told with attention to detail and wonderfull discriptions from start to finish will appeal to all age groups and light up anyones imagination who reads it.
Then end of the book leaves you wanting to know what will happen next in this story..
Cant wait for the next book for this adventure to continue.
