Book Description

10 Feb 2014
The Viking ship is one of the most iconic images of the Viking Age. As well as including well-known vessels such as the spectacular ship-burials from Gokstad and Oseberg in southern Norway, Viking Ships introduces the newly-conserved Roskilde 6 ship from Denmark. Measuring at over 37 metres, this is the longest Viking ship ever discovered and will form the core of the touring exhibition Vikings: life and legend.. The Vikings used their shipbuilding skills to command the sea; their famous ships permitted the exploration, colonization and the raids for which they are best known. This book will explore the evolution of their sea-going vessels and celebrate this outstanding feature of the Viking Age.

4.0 out of 5 stars An amazing craft 12 Mar 2014
By Sussman TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
This title covers what I believe to be the heart and soul of the touring exhibition that is Vikings: life legend and is currently on show at The British Museum (where I got my copy), this ancient Viking war ship is over 37 metres, and is the longest Viking ship ever discovered, to see it in situ is truly amazing. This tome is a great accompaniment to the exhibition at The British Museum; there is plenty of detailed information about this long boat that was actually discovered beneath the Roskilde Museum and is part of between 5 to 6 vessels discovered there. Without these long boats would there have been any Viking era to speak of and how different would Britain and other countries look today? The book contains rather good pictorials/diagrams showing some amazing features and form of this vessel and you get good overviews and understanding which is very reader friendly, and not just a dry academic treatment. This not just not guide book, it is also stand alone tome that gives over a wealth of information in its own right. That said this book does add additional level information while you are visiting the exhibition. This is a very good title that is highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating topic well presented 14 July 2014

Great souvenir for those lucky enough to visit the British Museum while the Viking exhibition was displaying the last ship to be excavated out of Roskilde Fjord. But it is a good second prize for those who were not able to attend, with the added bonus that this can be read at leisure without the crowds (who almost made the exhibition a disappoint - and I do appreciate that I was part of the problem - three times).
