Product Description

Synopsis

The Viewpoints is a technique of improvisation that grew out of the post-modern dance world. It was first articulated by choreographer Mary Overlie, who broke down the notions of space and time into practical segments. Since that time, directors Anne Bogart and Tina Landau have expanded her ideas and adapted them for actors, so that they can learn to function spontaneously and intuitively. The Viewpoints, then, constitute a language for talking about what happens on stage. When coupled with Composition, which involves selecting and arranging the separate components of theatrical language, Viewpoints can offer performers an important new tool for creating and under-standing their art form. Like the Method before it, Viewpoints is the new gospel amongst American actors - and like the Method - it is already spreading to Britain. This book offers actors a primer in a revitalising new technique.

this book is a guide to viewpoints in practice. the technique is well worth exploring, and the results are always interesting..as an ensemble builder it is second to none. i feel the only danger is that it risks replacing rather than enhancing a more intellectually rigirous approach to creating theatre and the interrogation of ideas and/or text that should include...i do recommend it, though, and although there are times i do think it's a tad indulgent, it is a valuable addition to practice and is a great gateway to facillitating a creative process for the actor in the room......to answer my fellow critic above - i have unfortunately seen this methodology used to create stunning but intellectually imporverished work on a number of occasions now. it does not offer solutions to fitting the methodology into text work and as it is such an instantly prolific generator of material, it does unfortunately allow for some practitioner's lack of rigour to be submerged in what looks like very clever ideas....i have seen it give the illusion of profundity rather than touching any in finished performances.having said that, it can, if used with care, offer really interesting insights into complex texts and good theatrically bold staging ideas. i have roughed out a way to use it with complex text while keeping the work coming from the text rather than working towards it - but it has been an ongoing investigation. as a classical theatre director these considerations are hardly something one can ignore - however this is not always the case with other practice areas so perhaps the critic above will understand it is actually about practitioners using the book and how they do that and not bogart - although she could go deeper into how text and viewpoints might work. at no time does bogart's book suggest ignoring textual analysis and i never set out to say that. i would suggest to the practitioner working from text NOT to use it to generate material at the start of your process but do use it - it's fun.

Viewpoints for All 12 Aug 2006

This is a very special book and thoroughly overdue. Mary Overlie's book is still clearly missing from the canon on physical expressivitiy, but in the meantime, what could be better than the gospel according to Anne and Tina. Anne and Tina, clearly some of the most important successful theatre director's in moderm american culture. This book is a treasure trove of exercises and thoughts from building the ensemble to creating. I disagree with the previous critic, who reflects upon their own directorial training as to this book's credentials. I can only presume they don't teach at Columbia U, have an international reputation and just as many awards as SITI. I'm lucky to have studied with SITI company member Kelly Maurer and all I know is this stuff really works. Sure if you want a book on analysing the text, read Peter Hall's Advice to the Players or Stanislavski's Creating a Role or some other tome. The point is that this book comes at you from the point of view of the body, we are so inward facing, in our own heads that VP helps us get into the body, I'm not sure either director would suggest ignoring the intellectual side. This is a goldmine, actors, directors, writers, teachers, lecturers, professors, anyone interested in building a team, this is the book. This is the book!
