Product Description

Comedy highlights from the popular Richard Curtis-scripted TV show about a female vicar and her wacky rural parishioners. Stars Dawn French as the vicar Geraldine, Emma Chambers as the dippy verger Alice, James Fleet as Alice's bumbling boyfriend Hugo, and Gary Waldhorn as the conservative David.

From Amazon.co.uk

If you're expecting a selection of your favourite episodes from The Vicar of Dibley, then you'll be in for a bit of a surprise. For what we have here instead is Dawn French in conversation with John Plowman, the show's producer. Together, they introduce and analyse the characters and relive key moments from the series, neatly categorised under such headings as "Chocolate", "The Nearly Wedding" and "Celebrity Appearances" (don't forget they enticed both Kylie and Darcey Bussell onto the show, as well as a host of other celebs). So, it's very much a selection for diehard fans who want to be reminded of the highlights (and there are plenty), ranging from Alice's Teletubby bridesmaids to the arrival of Geraldine's mega-freezer, packed to bursting with Haagen-Dazs.

To watch this 90-minute film is to be reminded of just how brilliant--and topical--the concept was. The writing is as fresh as ever, as are the priceless group of characters who bring the scripts to life. From the very opening moments, when Geraldine turns up and jokes that they were expecting a man "beard, bible, bad breath; instead you got a babe with a bob cut and a magnificent bosom", you know you're in the presence of an enduring comic creation.

On the DVD: The Best of the Vicar of Dibley offers pretty minimal extras--an entertaining feature on real-life women vicars, laconically but pertinently narrated by Jo Brand. --Harriet Smith

It seems I am not the only one who bought this DVD thinking it was a selection of brilliant episodes. I love the Vicar of Dibley and it is indeed clips of the best bits, which are fun to watch, but leave you with the wish to watch the actual episodes. I recommend the buyer purchases the 1st series of the vicar of dibley as I bought it and I love it. So I was dissapointed with this DVD, hense 2 stars. For a die hard Dibley fanatic I'm sure this DVD is a good buy.

I found it very difficult to find out exactly what was on this DVD. It transpires that it is based around an interview with Dawn French, with short clips inserted regarding the various characters. Some of these clips are from the first series and some from the second. I just wish I had not spent money on a DVD I am unlikely to watch often, and will supercede when series 2 comes to market.

The DVD is a conversation with Dawn French (Geralding Granger) and the producer. They go through a some of the context in which the series was written, the location it was set in, the characters, gueststars and some favorite scenes. The conversation is interlaced with scenes from the series that illustrate their points.
There is also a clip called "The Real Vicars of Dibley" which talks about the changes within the Church of England regarding the ordination of women, profiles some unconventional priests and outlines how vicars have been presented on TV.
It was mildly interesting and does help complete one's collection but this DVD isn't a "must see". I'll be more pleased when the 2nd and 3rd seasons are available on DVD or if the Beeb decides to make more episodes...

I had bought this DVD in the expectation of seeing a selection of the best episodes. Instead we saw Dawn French talking with the producer about the characters, with short flashes of episodes featuring the people or features discussed. This is not what you expect from 'The Best of', and I was very disappointed. I'd rather make up my own mind. The composition of this DVD should have been shown better on its description. I will not watch it again.

If there was a no stars then this would be it!Bought this as a gift for Xmas, thinking that it would be a compilation of the best episodes from the series!Alas NO!What you get is a dialogue with Dawn & the producer interspersed with a few clips. This DVD would be ok as a bonus DVD along side another but is definately not worth parting with your money as a stand alone!

On buying this initially i though this would be a few of the best episodes but in fact i found out the whole thing was just clips. at first i was disappointed but despite the slow start it turned out to be quite a good video. There is a bonus feature which is 'the real vicars of dibley' which i found a little bit boring but some parts were ok. before each clip dawn french is there describing what happens and how they acted it etc. it's very interesting for every fan! and it features that hilarious clip where she falls in the puddle! a must for every fan! it is a good tape!

Dawn French what can you say one of the funniest comdians of our time who lends herself so wonderfully to this comedy, well written and very funny for sure.
The best of the 90's and one of the best comedys that was released on tv in our times, this tells a story from week to week of a village with it's residents that would stick in your mind from letisha with here very diffrent cakes and sandwich's,who would think of mixing Marmite and tomatoe sauce as a filling in your victoria sandwich,to frank with his i'm gay speech to jim with his no,no,no,yes, alice is a funny young lass who is smitten with Hugo Horton and is slightly not with us on the in joke,Hugo's father is the good old David Horton who is so very much like Mrs Bucket it's scary.Dawn French lends herself to the portrail of being a female vicar and not being excepted as so without alot of hard work and commitment which is so true in real life.
Well written comedy from Dawn French as always and we all know someone who is like every person on the show,i would recommend to anyone that needs a laugh to brighten your week.
