Book Description

12 April 2012

Luke Gamble cut his teeth as a mixed practice vet in the West Country. Now it's time to see if he can stand on his own two feet. Wild stallions, drowning cows and constipated snakes aside, Luke's challenges have only just begun.

No longer working at the West Country clinic, he's marrying the girl of his dreams while launching his own practice, Pilgrims. On top of that, he's managing his international veterinary charity and two other veterinary businesses. On his extreme travels around the world, Luke dodges hippos and chimps, and swaps the familiar farms of home for the refugee camps of Africa, all on his idealistic quest to make a difference.

But Luke is more than just an international vet. He's also a husband, a friend, an entrepreneur and, potentially, an Ironman triathlete. Does he have what it takes to juggle it all?

More About the Author

Luke qualified from Bristol University in 1999 and undertook a post graduate scholarship in large animal medicine and surgery at Cambridge University. ALthough primarily a mixed practice vet and based in his New Forest surgery, Pilgrims Veterinary Practice, he is also the founder of the international animal charity Worldwide Veterinary Service (www.wvs.org.uk). His voluntary work with WVS takes him all over the world, helping animals in extreme situations in places where there are no veterinary resources, and was the subject of two TV series on Sky 1. Luke also runs a pet travel company called PetAir UK.

Luke is a black belt in karate, an ironman triathlete and has run 152miles across the Sahara to raise money for his charity in the gruelling marathon des sables. In 2010, Luke was voted by the profession to be the recipient of the BSAVA Alf Wight Memorial Award (James Herriot Award). This is given to one vet in the UK annually for outstanding contributions in the field of animal welfare.

Luke is married to Cordelia (also a vet) and lives in the New Forest with their two children (soon to be three!), a ridgeback and a bossy rescue cat called Charlie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Veterinary Stories from Home and Abroad 26 May 2012
By John
Format:Hardcover
Here is a man who can multi-task and write about it all amusingly. Very self-deprecating, indeed very English, Luke Gamble seems to have crammed a great deal into his life so far both at home and abroad. It is too easy to compare him to James Heriot, who only had to deal with one veterinary practice that seemed to attract many eccentric clients; Luke has the same range of amusing characters, both farmers and pet owners but in Dorset not Yorkshire, but he also has other interests, not least his overseas charity that is so obviously close to his heart. He is an adventurer and if this were the 19th century he would probably be striving to explore the interior of the Dark Continent, not least so he could write many amusing tales as he defied the odds and brushed aside the very real dangers as matters of no consequence. This is the style of the man and of this excellent book. I bought his first book and enjoyed it so much that I finished it within one weekend; this one took slightly longer, five days, but only because I did not have the time to devour it in one sitting. Vet, businessman, traveller, philanthropist, animal-lover, father and, fortunately for us, a very amusing and talented writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Vet Returns 21 May 2012
By Claire
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I was very much looking forward to reading Luke's second book and I wasn't disappointed. He's obviously devoted to his animals and goes out of his way to try to make life better for them.

His charity work is inspiring as are his fund-raising efforts; his Ironman exploits are hilarious.

Looking forward to his next book!

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed 30 July 2014
Format:Hardcover
Do you know...I absolutely LOVE Luke and all his TV programmes but I can't really recommend his books. They ramble on. It's very clear that Luke is constantly on the go and does fantastic good in the animal world but I found this and his other book boring. Disappointed by the read

I look forward to the next episode in this man's action packed but most of all caring career. He is certainly answering his calling with a most powerful and honest voice. Animals are safer in his world.
