I bought this for my 15 month old for Xmas knowing it would be a bit early for him, but planning to play with it with him for a few months, teaching him how to use it independently. He is very advanced in fine motor skills for his age so I thought he would pick it up quickly. However, the turn bar at the side of the box, which makes the music 'half a pound of tuppenny rice...' required quite a delicate movement, which is probably for 2 1/2 years on. Plus, within moments of watching the first ever pop of the catapillar he figured out that by pressing the visible plastic clip which holds the lid down, he can make the catapillar pop out whenever he wants! So there is no motivation to learn how to turn the side bar, and no point in waiting for the 'pop' as far as he is concerned!
The catapillar is also quite difficult to push back into the box as it appears to be on a spiral coil which prevents it from retracting evenly, as so it requires some manipulation to ensure all catapillar and iteni are all pushed back in before the lid can be closed! I has a traditional jack in the box as a child which I don't recall being this complex!
It is a good quality toy and has the usual lovely bright colours. I would recommend it, but probably for an older child. I would also like to look at other similar toys available to compare ease of use etc.

Light, easy to use and entertaing every time! The children were able to use it easily and are continually entertained by the POP. I hear them giggling often!

Bought this for my 6 month old daughter as a Xmas gift. She loves watching the caterpillar popping up and in time will learn to operate by herself.

I bought this for my daughter's first birthday and it's a hit! The tin "box" is beautifully decorated. Wind the handle to hear the tune "Pop Goes the Weasel" and the Hungry Caterpillar pops out at the end.
The handle is quite difficult for very young children to use (it moves quite freely but is quite thin so not much to grab hold of) and you need a reasonable level of strength to push the Hungry Caterpillar back in to start over. However, with an adult's help, my little girl loves it and it's very much a toy that I hope will last for her to pass on to her own children one day.
It loses a star as it's quite expensive for what it is.

was looking forward to this but when I played it the tune was not exactly 'pop goes the weasel' some notes were badly off/out of tune
