When I visit a new city with some sight-seeing options I like to take one of those guided bus trips around first to see what I want to revisit later. This collection has served a similar function. I had ignored Shostakovitch for many years, put off by his "difficult" reputation. And yes, quite a few of the pieces here didn't appeal, but a good number did. I'm going to have to get Symphonies 7 &10 now plus Piano Concerto No. 1. It was also interesting to hear the Waltz from the Jazz Suite. It's a theme that is used from time to time on "The Apprentice", which I thought was from "La Traviata".
Give it a go. If you like Stravinski and Rachmaninoff then I'm sure you'll find something you like here.
