4.0 out of 5 stars Good introduction to Shostakovich 24 July 2007
By Mart TOP 100 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD
This Naxos double CD is effectively a reworking of the original single CD release `The Best of Shostakovich', expanded to include more of the composer's music then attractively packaged with new artwork and a card slip-case cover showing an amusing caricature of the composer.

As with any `Best Of' compilation much of the composer's work will inevitably be omitted. Shostakovich wrote around 110 pieces during his lifetime and his 15 symphonies, which have steadily gained popularity during recent years, can only be represented here by including single movements of selected symphonies (the ones included, which amount to less than half of the composers total, are 1,5,7,9,10,13 & 15).

It should be noted too that there are several collections of the complete Shostakovich symphonies available as medium-cost box sets, although these can be a little heavy on the ear for some newcomers to the world of Shostakovich.

I think this double CD is a good introduction to Shostakovich's music, and although the 26 tracks can represent only a small part of the composers work, it does give a good cross-section of his musical style. There are several familiar pieces, such as the 'Jazz Suite' and the 'Gadfly Suite', which the listener may be surprised to learn were composed by Shostakovich.

The sleeve notes are helpful for those wanting a little more than these highlights, for they provide recommended further listening (all Naxos label CD's of course!). But for those who do not wish to delve any deeper and are content with these types of collections there are a number of other Naxos `Very Best Of' releases featuring other composers, which together can form the basis of a respectable and reasonably comprehensive classical music CD library.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's not all "difficult" 15 July 2014
By DB
Format:Audio CD
When I visit a new city with some sight-seeing options I like to take one of those guided bus trips around first to see what I want to revisit later. This collection has served a similar function. I had ignored Shostakovitch for many years, put off by his "difficult" reputation. And yes, quite a few of the pieces here didn't appeal, but a good number did. I'm going to have to get Symphonies 7 &10 now plus Piano Concerto No. 1. It was also interesting to hear the Waltz from the Jazz Suite. It's a theme that is used from time to time on "The Apprentice", which I thought was from "La Traviata".

Give it a go. If you like Stravinski and Rachmaninoff then I'm sure you'll find something you like here.

like some of the tracks and one very much but some of them are not the best - bit of a lottery when you dont know quite what you are going to get on a double CD

5.0 out of 5 stars Shostakovich is wonderful 17 Dec 2012

I really have only just 'discovered' Shostakovich's music and I was delighted to be able to buy an excellent compilation. I love this CD and would recommend highly. Delivery was fast and efficient also.

1.0 out of 5 stars A mistake 23 April 2013
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is very dour. Concentrates on his more "modernist" material and offers little pleasure for those hoping for some of his more lyrical work
