Although Sandy Nelson was not the most proficient of drummers he was loud, powerful and energetic and his style has influenced many drummers down the years. His biggest hit was Teen Beat(1959) which (of course)is not included here and is one of several reasons why this is anything but the very best of. In fact I'd go so far and call it the very worst. Whoever at EMI decided this was 'The Very Best Of' should be put in a cell for a year and forced to listen to Yakety Yak on repeat. Trust me there are much better comps out there that don't rely on what must have been one of Sandy's worst LPS: Rock'n'Roll Revival to pull in the punters. There are a few saving graces, the menacing 'In Beat', the groovy 'Back Off Boogaloo' and of course the mighty 'Let There Be Drums' which must rank in the top ten great instrumentals ever recorded.
The CD sleeve contains no information regarding Sandy Nelson or when or where these tracks were recorded. All EMI have bothered to tell us is that they were originally released on The Liberty label and were remastered in 2003. This is where I think the tracks derive from
