BBC Review

A first inkling of spring and The Very Best of Sandy Shaw what a combination! Fresh, optimistic and brimming with a forgotten sense of innocence.

Shaw's story starts in Adam Faith's dressing room (a chaperon was present, we should assume) where she secured the promise of an introduction to his manager, big time Eve Taylor. Though barely out of school, the Dagenham girl had presence, faultless pitch and crystal clear tone. Taylor took her on and scored a #1 the following year with a cover of Burt Bacharach and Hal David's "(There's) Always Something There To Remind Me" (1964).

A string of hits followed over the next three years, most written and produced by Chris Andrews. Boasting twenty six tracks, this album chronicles Shaw's development through this era and reveals a host of lesser known gems like "Message Understood" (1965), "Run" (1966) and "You've Not Changed" (1967).

Barefoot and mini-skirted, Shaw became an icon for her generation and a truly great vocal talent. Her deft swing phrasing even proved the perfect foil for Andrew's curious embracing of the German oom-pah band sound. All in the garden would have been groovy, except that fewer people were buying her records.

Taylor's response was to shove Sandie into The Eurovision Song Contest. She won with "Puppet On A String" (1967) but loathed the track, written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter, blaming it for her continued loss of cred. You'd have to concur but the same writing team penned "Tonight In Tokyo" (1967) which though equally kitsch is not cloying and an unexpected highlight on the album.

Covers of "Rose Garden" (1971) and "Father And Son" (1972) bring Shaw's personal journey to a poignant conclusion. Still mirroring the times, her once innocent tone now subtly conveys a recognition that everything might not be possible after all. As for the album, it ploughs on with tracks from the early '80s, recorded with The Smiths and BEF; a shame, for they only pale beside a brilliant canon of solo work. --Antony Hatfield

This is an excellent collection of Sandie's music as it contains not only her biggest hits (Tomorrow, Nothing Comes Easy, Message Understood) etc but many lesser known tracks that don't get aired even on nostalgia shows on the radio such as How Can You Tell, I Dont Need Anything, the atmospheric and dramatic Run and the Dusty-ish Think Sometimes About Me as well as the cream of her 80s work like Hand In Glove.
Sandie is a truly versatile singer and I found this album to be really enjoyable and highly recommend it to anyone wanting a comprehensive collection of her recordings.

Born Sandra Goodrich, she was discovered by Adam Faith and became Sandie Shaw. Sandie quickly established herself as one of the most important female singers of her generation, at least in Britain, between 1964 and 1967. Sandie was best suited to up-tempo material and that is clearly reflected in this collection. If you are looking for soft, romantic love songs, look elsewhere.

Sandie began her career with the Bacharach-David classic, Always something there to remind me. Taking the record to the very top of the UK charts, she knocked Roy Orbison (Oh pretty woman) off the top spot and remained there for three weeks, after which (curiously) Oh pretty woman returned to the top for one last week at the top.

Chris Andrews (who had his own hit with Yesterday man) wrote all of Sandie's subsequent hits prior to Puppet on a string, including her second UK number one (Long live love) and three other UK top ten hits (Girl don't come, Message understood, Tomorrow).

By the beginning of 1967, Sandie seemed to be fading fast, but she was then selected to represent Britain in the Eurovision song contest, which she won with Puppet on a string, written by Bill Martin and Phil Coulter. Sandie hated the song (so do I) but the public loved it and it became her third and last UK number one hit.

Sandie only had one more UK top ten hit, Monsieur Dupont, a translated French song. It was the first of two hits that Sandie had in 1969, after which it seemed that her career was over.

Sandie made a surprise comeback in the eighties because some of that decade's pop stars were fans of Sandie. Morrisey (then lead singer of the Smiths, who has since gone solo) was foremost among them. The Smiths had originally failed to make their own breakthrough with Hand in glove, but after making the big time with other songs, they provided the backing for Sandie's cover of the song. The ensuing publicity helped it to become a UK top thirty hit. Sandie followed-up with a minor hit, a cover of Are you ready to be heartbroken (Lloyd Cole).

Apart from all the hits, this set includes Sandie's covers of Those were the days (Mary Hopkin), Rose garden (Joe South - later to become an international hit for Lynn Anderson) and Anyone who had a heart (an American hit for Dionne Warwick, a British hit for Cilla Black and a French hit for Petula Clark). Also here is a single that completely missed the charts (Heaven knows I'm missing him now) but which inspired Morrisey to write the Smiths hit, Heaven knows I'm miserable now.

This compilation contains everything that most people will ever want of Sandie's music.

I was rather taken back as this CD was sent to me "Unsealed" and a sticky label someone had obviously tried to get it off was on the case. Having said that, this is a really good recording of Sandie Shaw and a great line up of the popular sixties Hits. Not ALL the hits on this album, but most! Its a shame, some lesser well known songs are on it, some that didn't even chart. I would rather have had the recording company left these songs off and put others that charted on instead and put the price up. Maybe I am asking too much? All in all a great CD with 20 of her popular charted hits. A great CD from our friends at Amazon. BUY IT!

Sandie was a puppet
There's no doubting her status as a 60s icon, but Sandie was never a "singer". She had brilliant, catchy songs, and she obviously had a good team around her. Read more
