Ignore previous review by myself which was for the Detroit spinners.
A remastered collection from one of Motown’s unsung heroes.
The CD covers their work from 1966 with the brilliant unreleased Holland Dozier Holland composition Suspicion, and all the hits starting with their first Baby I’m For Real to the 70s disco hit Down to Love Town.
The album has a 70’s feel, with six of the tracks having being written and produced by Marvin Gaye, so these tracks have his early sound, other contributors include Steve Wonder, Lamont Dozier, Berry Gordy, Frank Wilson and Johnny Bristol. So the writing and production teams are of the highest calibre.
A slice of Motown history highly recommended 4 stars.

I wasn't too familiar with a lot of the Originals work, only Baby I'm for real and Down to love town, but having read somewhere that Marvin Gaye had done a bit of work with them I thought I'd take a punt.Im glad I did .These tracks from the late sixties and early seventies are great examples of the Motown sound of this era. They are brilliant singers and the playing is well up to scratch as you'd expect.Go and buy this,if you like Motown you'll love this

This is an absolute classic for lover of deep 70's funk. All the songs just arrive beautifully with a characteristic throbbing porno bassline and guitar grooves that stick in your mind for a long time. My personal favorite is "Down to love Town", and track that will wake you up anytime of the day. I suggest any Dj worth his salt purchases this, and anybody who is having a house party. As we say in Ulster - "An absolute belter!"

A budget CD from Spectrum covering their years at Motown prior to moving to Atlantic and all their big chart hits.
The CD contains the Stevie Wonder penned monster It's a shame, which was their biggest hit at Motown along with other goodies Together we can make such sweet music, Truly Yours, I'll always love you, and where is the girl.
This along with the greatest hits CD covers the best of the group at and after Motown and both are available at budget prices.
Best to buy both and listen to one of the best vocal groups to ever come out of Detroit

Very Good With One Flaw 20 July 2003
By "allseasonscafe" - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This group is one of the understated talents Motown had
as well as FANTASTIC FOUR. These guys should have been as big as the Temptations. They remind you of the Dells,Dramatics,Moments, and Black Ivory. These groups were awesome. The reason I gave this four and not five stars is there is an album by the Originals called "Defintions".
On that album there is a song "The Exodus Song" it seriously borders on gospel, that seriously uplifting.
There is a story behind the song. 2 djs made a bet. One dj said they could not record the song in one take. The song was done impromptu, the engineer recorded it and the rest was history. According to the story it is a difficult song to sing as well as play for a musician. Try and find the vinyl copy of that lp. My mom has her's under lock and key.
This is still a good purchase a lot of these songs are hard to find, but find "DEFINTIONS" make it a mission.

A talent that fell through the cracks 29 May 2002
By Brent Jeffers - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
This cd is a must for music lovers that either remember when music was music or love old skool.
The Originals had an unique sound, mixing doo-wop street corner harmony, with smooth mellow rythyms that saturated R&B music of 60's/70's They also boast arguably the greatest recording artist ever in Marvin Gaye singing backrounds. For the first six songs in this set, Marvin weaves his smooth tenor and falsetto voice throughout the tracks making them sound impecaple. As far as the other nine tracks on this cd, they are very good as well but the Marvin Gaye produced tracks are definitely the highlight of this cd. I particularly like the songs I'll Wait For You, We Can Make It Baby and Just To Keep You Satisfied. They exhibit harmonizing at its best.
If you are a fan of good music, you will enjoy this cd very much, I guarantee it.

Where do we go from here...? 2 Feb. 2006
By William Blackshear - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
With the 90s, "Superstar Series", "Baby, I'm For Real", & "Portrait Of The Originals" (the latter two reissues of their first two albums) cd releases long out of print, and when offered for sale, are at supply/demand numbers, it appears this "Very Best Of" and the import reissue of the first lp, are "it", at this time, provided the other UK "Best Of" fails to present itself. This cd is a 1999 release, yes plenty of copies were manufactured at that time, are they still being produced? For the informed, if the need is present to sell the necessity of the cd into an old-school soul music collection, just what is in the collection? For the un-informed, unquestioned late 60s early 70s ballad classics "Baby, I'm For Real", "The Bells, & "God Bless Whoever Sent You", rank with some of the best of the time, ticket the cd in! Should the cd be in an old school soul music collection is not the question, the question is, is this cd an already out of print cd, waiting for remaining copies to sell? If so, what then? As we see when cds go out of print, then out ofstock, not worth the risk of not buying while the buying is good. Buy now!

Outstanding harmony and versetality 19 May 2003
By John - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have been blessed with being around when this group came from behind the scene, and I was in awe then as I am now that I was able to reacquire there music through a CD. My only sorrow is that they did not make more albums. I recently saw them perform on one of the PBS stations, and it is my hope that they will remain together and perform. I want to say that my favorite i "Baby I'm for real" however, who am I kidding, I enjoy all of the songs on the CD. BUY THERE MUSIC, YOU WON'T BE SORRY.
