Product Description

2005 compilation features three bonus tracks, 'Restless', 'Set Me Free', & 'Burn On The Flame'.Sweet was one of the most successful UK bands of the 1970s. They started out with Funny Funny in 1971, a singalong vocal pop hit and that same year they had another huge success with the clever pop song Coco, a song about a monkey, with sweet hooks and gorgeous harmonies. As the 1970s progressed, their sound evolved into a type of bubblegum metal, power pop or glamrock, as on the brilliant Blockbuster, Hell Raiser and Ballroom Blitz. The very best tracks are the aforementioned, plus the amazing Fox On The Run. The album includes some of their best album tracks like Restless, Set Me Free and Burn On The Flame, that display Sweet's more serious hard rock side. Overall a very enjoyable mix of vocal and hard edged pop plus some serious glam rock excursions

With a style that mixed lightweight, teenybopper music with heavy metal (a strange mix, indeed), Sweet ultimately ended up falling between the two, not pleasing anybody from either camp. Before that, they scored a string of UK hits including a number one (Blockbuster) and five number twos (Co-co, Hell raiser, Ballroom blitz, Teenage rampage, Fox on the run). Note that Fox on the run is an original song, not a cover of Manfred Mann's song. Little Willy and Wig-wam-bam both made number four in the UK. Their last major hit, Love is like oxygen, made the top ten in Britain and America - it actually did slightly better in America than Britain.
All seventeen of the Sweet's UK hits (including the minor hits) are here together with three album tracks that illustrate what Sweet wanted to do with their music. Having had their career controlled others (the production team of Chinn and Chapman), they cut loose on titles such as Restless and Set me free.
This is the definitive Sweet hits compilation. If you enjoy British glam-rock of the early seventies with a hard edge, you are likely to enjoy Sweet's music.

At last! The pretty much definitive hits collection that we all have been waiting for. After so many years of looking at half baked compilation sweet albums, this is the one to buy. Every track a classic from the early papa jo and co co right through to the latter hit of love is like oxygen (shame that the extended version is missing) all in all a great retrospective.
Now bring on the definitive Slade collection!

Not everything is great here, since Poppa Joe, Alexander Graham Bell, Little Willy and Wig Wam Bam are disposable and lightweight pop. But their 1978 hit Love Is Like Oxygen is much more mature, a type of tuneful hard rock.
The album includes some of their best album tracks like Restless, Set Me Free and Burn On The Flame, that display Sweet's more serious hard rock side. Overall a very enjoyable mix of vocal and hard edged pop plus some serious glam rock excursions.

Of the Sweet compilations over the years this is the one to get. Present and correct are all the glam rock stack-heeled teen pop hits that made these 'brickies in drag' (as some unkind souls called Brian and the boys) the defining sight and sound of early Seventies Britain. They may have entered a Faustian pact with the devil (or the hit factory devils that were ChinniChap) for fame and fortune in return for their hard rock souls, but after the early bubblegum hits came some truly thrilling pop football terrace/school disco anthems: "Ballroom Blitz", "Wigwam Bam", "Teenage Rampage", "Blockbuster" and "Hell Raiser", complete with crowd chants and wailing police sirens.

Mercifully this collection only has a few of the group's wannabe heavy rock B-sides, later flop singles and album tracks, while a 1998 stomping and electronically beefed up hit 'dance remix' comes as an interesting bonus. This surprisingly effective reworking would have been better programmed at the end of the running order. In fact the mixing here of the band's glam rock, bubblegum and AOR rock hits beggars the age old question: why do compilers of greatest hits insist on not presenting tracks chronologically? It ain't "Funny, Funny".

If you want an album which will take you back to the 70's, make you smile and possibly surprise you, then this is a great way to achieve all three. Alice Cooper it is not, but the 'rock in glam' perhaps wasn't fully appreciated at the time. The bonus tracks might also view The Sweet in a different light.
