Montrose erupted onto the music scene in 1973 when the former Edgar Winter and Van Morrison sidekick decided to go down his own hard rock avenue. The result was the powerful eponymous debut (one of the greatest rock albums ever)and "Paper Money", a varied follow-up with more excellent material. Accompanying Montrose's powerful and tasteful fretwork was a youthful Sammy Hagar, one of rocks most recognisible vocalists.

Four tracks are culled from each of these albums, and they are the highlights of the set. Hagar split after Paper Money and there followed a noticeable decline in quality. Bob James never lived up to his predecessor and the songwriting suffered also. The remaining 10 tracks here are pulled from "Warners Presents", "Jump on it" and "Mean"(a 3rd incarnation, where again comparisons with Hagar were inevitably unfavourable)and in most cases they pale beside the early releases. "All I need" is an exception, but it highlights Ronnies melodic side rather than hard rock. "Black Train" would have been preferable to "Clown Woman" and the "Mean" tracks are very routine metal.

You would be far better off with the first 2 albums, but this compilation would have benefited from a shorter selection of the later material and a track or two more from "Montrose" or "Paper Money"

One of the first heavy rock bands to come out of America, its influence on the bands which would follow,Kiss,Aerosmith,Van Halen etc there for everyone to hear.

Opening with 4 classic tracks from the self titled debut,Montrose give it big licks from the off,'Rock The Nation' with its thundering riff followed by 'Bad Motor Scooter',one of the greatest ever rock tracks before 'Space Station No 5' with its 'Hawkwind' like intro before 'Rock Candy' literally destroys your speakers, you cant tell me Kiss never took that drum sound as their reference point for the Creatures Of The Night album(I Love It Loud in particular).

The next 4 tracks are from the unfairly slated follow up,Paper Money,it was always going to struggle to live up to the debut, still 'I got The Fire' is class and you can hear where Aerosmith got some inspiration on 'Spaceage Sacrifice'

The rest of the disc covers the less celebrated period the 2 follow up studio albums after Sammy Hagar left, with vocalist Bob James struggling to shake of Hagars ghost, that being said there are some great tracks here such as 'Clown Woman,Lets Go & Music Man' whilst the last three tracks from '87 feature one time Foriegner vocalist Johnny Edwards and include the superb 'M For Machine'

Naturally everyone focuses on the first 2 albums, they are the best, this compilation confirms that but it also proves that the band continued after Hagar and made some fine music, its an excellent remaster, worth your money at this price.

thanks amazon.co uk you made my birthday great what a blast from the past . space station no 5. rock the nation . I got the fire . this really is a great c.d,any one who remembers heavy rock years 1975 will truly love this c.d. What an underarated guitarist ronnie montrose was, here this collection of songs shows off both ronnie montrose's guitar skills and fine vocal works of sammy haggar on the early songs. buy this album now!you will not be disappointed
