This album conatains re recordings of many of Kenny Rogers best known hit's and three origanal recordings (the solo "What I Did For Love" and two duets with Dolly Parton)
"What I Did For Love", this was suprisingly only a minor hit, but it is a very good song. A song about the bad side of love when you've been let down.
Of course this was not the first time Kenny had sung about the topic as the next track, a re recording of his 1969 Number 1 hit "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town", reminds us.
A song about a solider who can't walk and can infact barley move at all, yet his lover is still cheating on him. For anyone who hasn't heard the song before, this must sound very depressing and it is, but the melody of the song is so upbeat it makes it bearable. To this day, despite the dark lyrics, Rogers performs this at concert and rather than tears and depression, the audience are dancing along and clapping their hands to the fun tune of the song.
However, it's not all doom and gloom. Rogers is the king of the tender love ballad as well as the story telling song. "Lady", "Love Lifted Me", "She Believes In Me", "You Decorated My Life" and such like are songs about wonderful romances (sadly two of my favourite love songs by Rogers "Through The Years" and "Love The World Away" are missing for this collection).
It's with story telling Country songs like "Ruby", "Lucille", "The Gambler" and "Coward Of The County" (all included here) that Rogers made his mark as a top artist in the 1970s and later with hit's such as "She Believes In Me", "Lady", "Through The Years", and "You Decorated My Life" Rogers extended his fan base by singing tender love songs.

On the surface the track listing should appeal to any Kenny Rogers fan. However the cd is spoilt by the fact that most of the versions are different to their chart entries. Most annoyingly slower. Buy a different compilation.

10 of the tracks on this CD are taken from the 1990 US release "20 Great Years" and are re-recording of his Greatest Hits. Don't let that put you off as they are state of the art digital recordings produced by top Nashville producer Jim Ed Norman. If you have good audio equipment the sound quality compared to the originals is amazing. It will be personal taste which you prefer...I enjoy and regularly play both versions. Of the four additional tracks: "Islands In The Stream" and "Love Is Strange" are (of course!) duets with Dolly Parton and "What I Did For Love" and "Love Lifted Me" are both great songs. This is a great CD. I think some people are disappointed as the most famous songs are not the originals that they were expecting, but these are really great recordings.

This collection of Kenny's songs is quite good however I was disappointed that very few (if any) of the songs are the ORIGINAL recordings.

Disappointing. The quality of the cd is poor when compared with earlier original and digitally remastered cd's. A number of songs on this cd are on "The Kenny Rogers Story" but are noticably different and of poorer quality.

Kenny Rogers' known world-wide for his Country and Western roots also
found his way into the U.K Pop-Charts with some memorable numbers.
He has entertained the audiences with his great songs and stage-presence
for over forty years his music reaching out to both 'Pop' and Country fans.
He started out way back in the mid-fifties forming a rock-a-billy group called
the 'Scholars' in 58' he recorded a number called 'That Crazy Feeling' on the
'Carlton' label.
Come 1966 'Kenny' joined 'The New Christy Minstrels' leaving a year later
to form a group called 'The First Edition' they sang a mix of 'Rock' and 'Country'
however the group soon became known as 'Kenny Rogers' and 'The First Edition'
this being around the time he caught the attention of music lovers everywhere
with his smash-hit -'Ruby Don't Take Your Love To Town' way back in 1969 which
peaked at number '2' here in the U.K. followed up in 1970 with the song 'Something's
Burning' a U.K number '8'
'Kenny' went solo in 1974 which is really when he started to become the Great artist
we all know today.
He of course achieved hits world-wide in both Country and Pop Charts, here in the
U.K. charting with a string of hits such as 'Lucille' (1977 Chart U.K Number 1) in
1980 'Coward of The County' (Chart U.K Number 1) followed up by the song 'Lady'
(Chart U.K Number 12) in 1983 he charted with the 'Gibb' Brothers song sung with
'Dolly Parton' 'Islands in The Stream' (Chart U.K Number 7) These songs being
perhaps the numbers he's best remembered for, of course he did have one or two
more chart successes including 'The Gambler'
'Kenny Rogers' of course put in an appearance at the 'Glastonbury' festival last year.
