"No, no, no," said my colleague from Ireland when I put this CD on for someone's leaving party. "This is the kind of music they record for American tourists." To me, it sounded a bit too 'hard-core' and 'serious' for the bit of fun background music for which I bought it.

I suppose I ought to have known: I would never have bought something entitled "The very best of..." about any kind of music I understood. As it is, it seems that this is worst of both worlds: not authentic enough for the purist, not nice enough for a bit of party background.

It certainly did not get 'rave reviews' from any of the people who heard it, and has now gone into the drawer of prospective raffle prizes.

Sorry to anyone involved in creating it.

"No, no, no!" said my colleague when I ordered this and put it on for someone's leaving do. "That's the kind of Irish Folk music they sell to tourists. It's not the real thing at all."

I can't comment on the authenticity, but the sound is actually quite hard work, and I don't think anyone really enjoyed it. To my ears it had the unproduced quality which dedicated folk music sometimes has, but being told that it wasn't authentic at all really robbed the lack of smoothness of its purpose.

If you're buying, go with something which is either more authentic, or easier listening. This, it would seem, is a worst of both worlds collection.

Sorry.

If you enjoy Irish music and song, you could do worse. It's a fair selection to go with other stuff and very good value.

Iz was made in early 90's when Irish folk was on crosstroads because of enourmous succes by Clannad, Enja and Moya Brennan solo work - sounding more and mores as New Age.
This comilation was good landmark where was Irish folk mainstrem especilally fairly rated the significance of The Johnonson music I Iriush folk worl - what was very underratded and forgotten last days.
Very very good stuff for exploring links between early and contemporary Irish Folk
