Product Description

Amazon.co.uk Review

A generation ago Brubeck was largely dismissed as an unswinging pianist with a vulgar preoccupation with odd time-signatures. Now he is a senatorial figure whose work is celebrated as much as it used to be reviled. On this evidence the contemporary view is fair. Brubeck could be heavy-handed, and some of his 1960s work was undoubtedly pretentious; on the other hand, he had considerable harmonic imagination, constantly surprised with his delicate melodiousness, and could generate prodigious swing. Moreover, in Paul Desmond he enjoyed the services of a top-class alto saxophonist who was also a deeply sympathetic spirit. Here they are joined on all but one of the 15 tracks by Brubeck's finest rhythm section, bassist Eugene Wright and drummer Joe Morello, and the programme, in addition to memorialising old favourites, includes Brubeck's excellent compositions "The Duke", "Mr. Broadway" and "In Your Own Sweet Way" and offers intriguing readings of "Camptown Races" and "Trolley Song". Strongly recommended to anyone new to Brubeck, the CD will please his dedicated fans too. --Richard Palmer

Classic Brubeck 2 Sep 2001
Format:Audio CD
No doubt spurned by the recent use of Unsquare Dance on television by Renault, this compliation sees the rerelease of Brubeck's greatest works.

Personally it is 'Take Five' that always makes me appreciate Brubeck's skill, but the CD includes many other classic jazz tracks, including a notably live recording of 'it's a raggy waltz'.

A good first time buy, which should draw the listener within its smooth chilled atmosphere.

Dave Brubeck will be forever known for the masterpiece that is `Take Five'. With its catchy melody and unusual time signature it is perhaps one of the best known jazz tunes out there.

But there was so much more to Brubeck than this one track, as this set shows off. We have track after track of gentle jazz that shows off his fascination with time signature, along with his delightful, restrained keyboard playing. It is accessible stuff, the experimental edge is tempered with a desire to keep it listenable and interesting, making this a great album to put on and relax to, for the casual listener or for the more hardened jazz nut.

Never bought a jazz album before - bought this on strength of Radio 4 programme. Not my usual music choice, but every music library should have this. You will know some if it.
