Product Description

From Amazon.com

Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller were attempting mini-radio plays in the writing and production work with the Coasters that provided all concerned with a string of hits that ran from 1955 into the early '60s. They added a few things to their memories of chestnuts like The Shadow Knows, however: the new R&B's stomp and swing, along with a subversive edge that made this kid stuff sound knowing to adults. As finely calibrated as anything to come out of the era's recording studios, sides like "Young Blood," "Searchin'," and "Along Came Jones" are definitely raucous, definitively hilarious. Inspirational verse, from "I'm a Hog for You": "One little piggy ate a pizza / One piggy ate potato chips / But this little piggy's comin' over your house / He's gonna nibble on your sweet lips." --Rickey Wright

As Shakespeare said:

Tis a consumation devoutly to be wished

Exactly-he may well have been talking about this, or not, but this is one you GOTTA have.

It not only features ALL the famous hits, it also chimes in with later gems like Shopping for Clothes & Sorry But I'm Gonna have to Pass.

And for good measure, the 2 records half of the Coasters made back in LA as the Robins are here too. And if anybody did hotter stuff than Riot in Cell Block 9 or Smokey Joe's Cafe, I've yet to find it!

Best of all, the entire lot are ORIGINAL recordings, all the Spark(Robins) or Atlantic(Coasters) sides that were made to blast pubs or cafes apart from a Wurlitzer jukebox.

As Wurlitzers don't come cheap, just buy this, turn up the volume loud & wonder why Down In Mexico didn't sell ten million copies, or just rock away-this is a hit, a hit, a veritable hit, as Shakespeare also foresaw in Hamlet!

Classic Mini Dramas 18 Jan 2003
By J. Skade VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
During the late fifties and early sixties the Coasters made some of rock'n'roll's finest ever records. This pretty much faultless selection is essential to any self respecting record collection.
The story begins in LA where a band known as The Robins were recording for a record label called Spark owned by songwriters Lieber and Stoller - the superb comedy drama of 'Riot In Cell Block Number #9' featuring guest vocalist Richard Berry (author of 'Louie Louie') and the equally superb and even funnier 'Smokey Joe's Cafe' - these recordings caught the ears of the owners of Atlantic records who signed up Lieber and Stoller and those members of the Robins willing to follow them who became the core of The Coasters.
The records they made are small pieces of genius; the songs were playlets often inspired by radio drama and superbly interpreted by the group. Listen to the different voices interacting on the joyous 'Searchin'' and its stablemate the febrile comedy of 'Youngblood'. Perfect. The songs reflect the real lives of young (especially black) listeners - 'Yakety yak' reflects teen rebellion more accurately than anything James Dean ever involved himself with whilst 'What About Us' and 'Shopping For Clothes' move into a riskier, more politicised area.
The sheer quality and richness of all 17 songs is amazing. This is rock'n'roll with imagination. Aside from the more familiar hits I especially love 'Along Came Jones' and the lovely song of marital fidelity 'Sorry But I'm Gonna Have To Pass'.
Music to cherish.

By Christopher W. Brierley TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Audio CD
The Coasters were an american pop group famous for a few hits in the 1950's,especially Yakety Yak,which is almost annoyingly catchy.
I wanted a CD of all their well known hits and I wanted it digitally remastered as recordings from the 1950's are not so good.
This CD was remastered by Inglot and Hersch at Digiprep. They have done a good but not outstanding job of the remastering as there is some tape hiss noise audible in the rare quieter moments of the music. There is also "hum" on one track, yet all these flaws can be removed if the time and trouble is taken, hence my 4 STARS rating.
At the time of writing,Feb 2011,despite several hours of research on the web, there is as far as I can tell no better version available,so this is THE ONE TO BUY.It can be found cheaply on the "Flashback" label, which is also Rhino, they have just literally stuck a different label on,pehaps to get rid of some surplus stock. It has also been re-released a few times, either with 16 or 17 tracks. My own issue is 1994 Atlantic Rhino
