Chris Spedding made his name really as one of the British Music Industry's great guitars-for-hire of the 1970s. Few musicians could include records from ex-Velvet Underground founder John Cale and The Wombles on their musical CV, but that's just two of Spedding's many clients in his time. As a soloist, he recorded three albums for the Harvest label in the early 1970s (including the very rare 'Songs Without Words'), and in the mid-70s signed to Mickie Most's RAK label, home of Mud, Suzi Quatro and Hot Chocolate. Spedding was also one of the very few elder statesmen musicians who gave Punk any kind of positive recognition, and produced the very first Sex Pistols demo recordings. He had a top twenty solo hit with 'Motor Bikin', which he never really followed up, but did release four pretty decent albums for RAK, the best of which are included here. Snag with Spedding though, is that he was never a great singer, and his somewhat thin and characterless voice never matches his guitar playing skill. However, this tidy, inexpensive compilation has some wonderful moments, where his sizzling guitar work really takes off. Spedding still makes albums, and if you're a guitar player like me, there's always something worthwhile to listen to, even if it's not his voice!

His son Steven was a success, but many forget what a great artist this guy was. This is his terrific greatest hits collection which starts with my personal favourite track "Rock N Roll Band" which is a great song up there with his very best! The album is packed with his hits throughout his long and successful career. OK, fair enough his son steven Spedding was an absolute superstar and some what over-shadowed his success in many ways, but his dad Chris also showed him how it was done with other classics such as "White Lady" and "New Girl in the Neighbourhood". The album features some of his more heart-felt songs like "The Crying game" and "hurt by love", which conveys Spedding's potential to write heart-felt ballads as well as rocking hits like "Gunfight" and "Roadrunner". All in all, this guy was brilliant, not up there with his son, Steven, in my opinion, but still a very under-rated singer who deserves more recognition for his classic songs!
