This compilation starts off very strong and im pleased to say very predictably.Such a collection just has to begin with "The Stripper" but number 2 "Harlem Nocturne" by "The Viscounts" almost out-sleazes it. Both discs are one sure scandal after another and some of the titles alone are all you need to know to guage the subject matter."She likes to boogie real low", "Fever"(of course it couldn't not be here in some guise),"Just a gigolo...", "Hot little mama" and "More bounce to the ounce". The contents are obviously not about "The moon in june" or the price of doggies in windows!

This is some of the choicest r&b, blues, jazz and rockabilly cuts of the era. Almost all are from the 50's. On balance this is an excellant compilation and almost never puts a foot wrong.

One minor criticism and one of the two reasons (the 2nd reason is in the next paragraph) for the missing 5th star.I've got quite a few of these "Not Now" compilations as they are great value for money but someone has to be vetting the selection for future ones. For example,as much as i love the song "Suzie-q",is almost beginning to induce a yawn it turns up on so many of them.Just because a song is really good doesnt mean it has to be on every release. Surely with so much becoming available due to expiring copyrights it wouldnt be difficult to give some other lesser known songs a moment in the the sun.

On a (almost)final note "Not Now" seem to have part way addressed the issue of flimsy jewel cases for these doubles. I say in part as this one was sturdier than earlier issues but the middle that holds the 2 discs still comes out of its housing too easily. Maybe it shouldnt be an issue at these prices but i dont expect to pick discs off the floor the 1st time i open a case to play them.

To conclude on a positive note though as it does deserve it...If you just want to play something that will put a smile on your face this is the double disc set for you.Delightfully lascivious and often very much nudge nudge wink wink. This set will put a knowing twinkle in yer grannys eye that will make YOU blush.

Not too sleazy... 15 Jan 2011
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE

This really is an atmospheric set opening with the classic "The Stripper" performed by David Rose orch but including so much more and from a huge timespan too. The set has a total running time of approx 138 minutes. The performances come from as early as 1932 with Cab Calloway and as recent as 1959 with Bobby Darin. You get to hear all kinds of music that could well have featured at a burlesque show and it includes big band, jazz, blues, bebop, latin. The sound quality is very good and Not Now are putting together some different compilations that will interest a wide audience. The liner notes are by Mick St Michael and the whole thing is nicely packaged. Another excellent addition to the catalogue...

Not what I expected 28 Dec 2011
By BabsS
Format:Audio CD
I bought this as a present and finally listened to this today. It is not Burlesque, no 30s stuff and mostly made up of Blue grass, American blues and some early jazz. If filthy sax sounds constitutes Burlesque then this CD might appeal. Some good numbers, notably, Lola, Fever, and So Many Ways to Love you but no Gypsy Rose Lee type songs or any German 30s stuff.

This is the first CD I am going to return to Amazon ever so very disappointed!
