Bobbie Gentry did not record many albums but several compilations have been released. Because Bobbie only had a few big hits that have to be included, the remainder of each compilation often differs significantly. This UK compilation includes plenty of cover versions, some of which were duets with Glen Campbell. There are very few original songs here but other compilations of Bobbie's music (particularly those compiled and released in America) feature Bobbie's original material heavily.
Of course, this compilation includes Ode to Billie Joe (an American number one and British top twenty hit) and I'll never fall in love again (a British number one hit). Perhaps these two songs, more than anything else, show the difference in tastes between British and American listeners. Ode to Billie Joe is a Bobbie Gentry original - a classic country song with a bluesy edge. Contrast that with I'll never fall in love again, a mainstream pop song written by Bacharach and David, first recorded by Dionne Warwick (and not to be confused with the Tom Jones hit of the same title). Following her British success, Bobbie became a TV presenter and this affected her recordings - she sometimes selected material that would appeal to her TV audience.
Bobbie had a minor international hit with Raindrops keep falling on my head, but B J Thomas had the big American hit with this song while Sacha Distel had the big UK hit, so Bobbie's version is generally regarded as a cover. Among the other covers here are four Beatles classics, these being Something in the way he moves, The fool on the hill, Eleanor Rigby and Here there and everywhere. Son of a preacher man was a huge hit for Dusty Springfield.

I've been collecting my favorite songs from the seventies and eighties which are primarily country or crossover. I finally got to "Ode to Billie Joe" and purchased this album.
This album has made me a huge Bobbie Gentry fan. Her talent is just amazing. Her delivery is gorgeous.
Her popularity in the late sixties/early seventies was big enough that she headlined in Las Vegas for quite a period of time. She had big solo success as well as with Glen Campbell. The one tune I don't care for on this collection is "Misssissippi Delta" Everything else is brilliant. "Something in the Way He Moves" has become an all time favorite.
If you like the Burt Bacharach style of music, try this, you won't be sorry

'Bobbie Gentry' an American Country and Western artist, who was born
in 1944 her real name being 'Roberta Lee Streeter' had a reasonable
amount of album success in the U.S and Canadian Country Charts during
67' - 70'
Here in the U.K she introduced herself in '1963' with her more than memorable
Chart -Hit 'Ode To Billie Joe' though it only peaked at number 13 over here
it's a number that has stayed with me down the years. ( The song did Top both
the 'American' and 'Canadian' Charts.)
'Billie' did achieve a U.K number '1' in 1968 with the number 'I'll Never Fall In Love
Again'
In 1969 she teamed up with 'Glen Campbell' to record a 1958 'Everly's' smash hit
'All I Have To Do Is Dream' which peaked at number '3' this side of the 'Atlantic'
the song also charted in both the Country and Singles Charts in both 'America'
and 'Canada'
'Billie's' only other Chart-entry in the U.K was a cover-version of the song 'Raindrops
Keep Falling on my Head' which reached number 40 (1970)
'Bobbie Gentry' is certainly a great vocal-talent who's versions on-board of songs such
as 'Dusty Springfield's' -'Son of a Preacher Man' the 'Nashville Teen's' -'Tobacco Road'
and a couple of 'Beatle's' tracks 'The Fool On The Hill' and 'Eleanor Rigby' along with
'Elvis's' song 'In The Ghetto' make this a pretty enjoyable album to listen too.
Her 'style' was in my opinion was worthy of greater recognition than she actually achieved.
'Ode To Billy Joe' one of the all-time 'Great' songs surely.

Always liked Bobby Gentry's song "What do you get when you fall in love", so when I recently bought a Glenn Cambell cd I was pleasantly suprised to hear his duets with Bobby Gentry, I thought they were very good together. As a result I looked for a cd of the two of them together, and this compilation is the very best of both, duets, and Bobby on her own really fits the bill. I just wish I had 'discovered' her before, she is very pleasant and easy listening. I reccomend this cd, not just for avid fans, but for anyone a little bit country, a little bit rock and roll!.

Bobbie Gentry at her best so country with that velvet voice, across a range of high quality songs that made her one of the top performing country ladies..

Great CD for nostalgia! Her gravelly voice is wonderful and I'd forgotten some of the great songs that she'd sung.

Bobbie Gentry was at a peak in the late 60's when I was really into the country music scene at that time. This album brought back some great memories.
