I know I'm sad, but I've been waiting for more than 20 years for this Best of... because I missed out on the original vinyl LPs. And then when it does come along they've gone and missed off "Quietly Bonkers"!
That aside, this set does contain the best of his 1960s musical excursions, three of which were hits, beautifully produced by George Martin and sounding as fresh as the proverbial daisy. They were really a forerunner of today's much more aggressive "street poetry", being gently amusing and satirical songs about everyday things, and they suited Cribbins' voice perfectly. A fine British comic actor he is but a singer more in the Rex Harrison department; his attempts at Hoagy Carmichael and Lerner & Loewe are the only two blind spots on this CD.
Also included are songs from his 1970s stage revival of "Hans Christian Anderson". It's always difficult to imagine anyone other than Danny Kaye doing these but they are sung admirably. And then there's "Giggling Gertie the Laughing Traffic Warden", a track I'd not heard before, an updating of Charles Penrose's "Laughing Policeman", with Miriam Margolyes going over the top with the guffaws.
All glorious stuff, the like of which we will probably not see again. Shame about QB though, I'll have to keep my worn red Parlophone single a bit longer.

My 14 year old daughter has been a devout Lonnie Donegan fan for 5 years and still prefers nursery rhymes to the likes of Enya, MeatLoaf and Pink Floyd [although she thinks Queen is OK and has an Abba collection on the back of Mamma Mia]. So I thought I would try her with 'The very best of Bernard Cribbins'. At the moment it's the CD she plays the most often, even pushing her recent Rolf Harris set off the top spot. Her particular favourites are 'The hole in the ground' spoof of the Ministry of Works c1960s, 'Right said Fred' and 'I don't like your Country Music' (which I initially thought was a zany modern track as I didn't recognise Bernard's voice). I have to say I was impressed with Bernard Cribbins's vocals and the quality of the recordings (they are clearly the original tracks from a young Bernard). I suppose his music should be classed largely as 'novelty songs' to support his main acting and voice-over career - more fun than funk.

The only downside perhaps is that 'The Wombles theme song' isn't included (probably he didn't sing it and just did the narration, with Mike Batt singing all the songs, can't remember that far back). Shame he didn't do a cover back then anyway. But otherwise the quality of these songs is a bit of a surprise, they are pretty good, no wonder I remember a few from my 60s childhood - they must have been minor hits (no mean feat in the vibrant UK pop scene of the time, dominated by class acts like The Small Faces, The Beatles, Cliff Richard, Bonzo Dog and The Kinks).

Some classic songs to turn the biggest frown upside down. Greats from get your hair cut and right said Fred will not only keep the older generation entertained but will also have the kids laughing uncontrollably.

Recommend for everyone, for those days where you need something to put a smile on your face.

I bought his collection for a copy of the hilarious `Right Said Fred', a tale that will resonate with everyone who has tried to shift some awkward furniture. I found a cornucopia of further joys, with Cribbin's take on officialdom, `Hole In The Ground' now firmly established as my new favourite song. Cribbins sings these with the world weariness of the ordinary working man. Later tracks show Cribbins to be an all round entertainer with a sense of humour. With sly takes on the blues and folk genres, and a few big musical numbers from Hans Christian Anderson thrown in, this is a delightful and entertaining collection from one of our national treasures. 5 stars

One or too gems that I remembered from childhood particularly on Junior Choice. I always loved Bernard Cribbins as a story teller on Jackanory so bought this in a fit of nostalgia. Won't play it often but nice to have.
