Underrated 9 April 2007

Format:Audio CD
I first came across Badfinger in the early 80s long after they split up, thanks to a friend who had the film The Magic Christian on 16mm and showed it to us endlessly! Great film by the way with Peter Sellers, Ringo, John Cleese etc. This group seems to be almost completely forgotten about today and endless 60s/70s revivals pass them by. This a real shame; for a start the Beatles influences are clearly there, most obviously on the track Come and Get it, written by McCartney, and Day after Day where George plays slide guitar. But they clearly learnt from their masters and wrote some really great songs. Carry On is a fabulous song and memorably appears in the film mentioned above. Without You is to my mind one of the weaker numbers on the album though possibly the most famous. For those who remember the Rock and Roll Years the group were shown playing No Matter What from the 1971 programme. I really recommend this compilation of a very good and sadly fogotten group.

Badfinger comprised Pete Ham (vocals, guitar), Tom Evans (bass), Joey Molland (quitar, keyboards) and Mike Gibbins (drums). They had two UK top five hits (Come and get it, No matter what) and a UK top ten hit (Day after day). These singles also did well in America, but the early promise was not sustained.

Perhaps their biggest legacy to pop music was a song that Pete and Tom wrote, but which was not a hit for Badfinger, although they recorded the song (and their version is included here). It is, of course, Without you. This haunting ballad became an international number one hit for Nilsson in 1972. It later became a country top ten hit for T G Sheppard in the eighties and a UK number one hit for Mariah Carey in the nineties.

Here you get the original recordings of the four songs already mentioned and many other excellent songs recorded for the Apple label. Things went badly wrong for the group after they left Apple, leading to Pete committing suicide in 1975 and Tom following suit in 1983.

I knew this band in the early days. I gave them a batman mascot and they became famous...so sad what happened to Tommy and Pete we all loved them when they played in Liverpool in the 1960's. Here it is Come and Get it, a fine cd of their wonderful hits and self penned songs including Without You.Come and Get It

Well remixed of old classics. A bit mixed. Some tracks are brilliant others rather ordinary. Hit ones like Day after day & come & get it are the best.

A great lost 1970s band
One of the better compilations of the Beatles-influenced band who met such a tragic end. Vastly underrated, they're best known for Paul McCartney's jaunty 'Come And Get It' but... Read more

Essential memories
I can't really add much to what the others have said but I do feel compelled to add that the reason this band ended up as they did was due to "Without You". Read more

Some of the best songs ever written
Not all these songs are top-notch; however, No Matter What, Day After Day and Without You are of the highest quality. They are three of the best songs ever written. Read more
