Biography

To a Brazilian mother and German father, Astrud Gilberto was born in Bahia, still Brazil's most Africanized state. With her two sisters she grew up in Rio de Janeiro, where she met and married singer-guitarist-songwriter João Gilberto, one of bossa-nova's originating stylists. In the early 1960s, when that Brazilian music, with its cooling melodies and hot, hip style emigrated ... Read more in Amazon's Astrud Gilberto Store

Product Description

This Astrud Gilberto collection draws on some of the most beautiful music ever recorded - just think of the sun-kissed beaches of Brazil, with the sultry sounds of bossa nova and samba of the 1960's - when men looked sharp in black suits and ties, the women always wore Chanel dresses with 'Jackie O' sunglasses, and International airports were the place to be seen!

5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant! 16 Aug 2006
By Brazil
Format:Audio CD
This album just oozes style; I've always been a fan of Astrud Gilberto and this CD collects together her finest moments. The Brazilian star sounds as fresh as ever, leaving her indelible mark on a host of classics tracks. Instatntly recognisable numbers such as The Girl from Ipanema, Fly Me To The Moon, Crickets Sing for Anamaria and Call Me are just some of the highlights on this wonderful album brimming with bossa nova brilliance.

Perfect listening to see out the last few weeks of summer, the album has a real timeless feel to it and confirms Astrud Gilberto's status as a genuine musical treasure.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitive Collection... 14 Aug 2009
By C. FULLER TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This 25 track compilation captures the essence of Astrud Gilberto and brings together her most defining performances. Many of the songs were recorded in 1963 but throughout the 1960s and ever since she has been a well known and instantly recognisable "sound" and the person most associated with "The Girl from Ipanema". Here you will find a number of sensational Jobim compositions such as "A Felicidade"; the haunting "How Insensitive" and romantically inclined "Corcovado". This music is everlasting because it is a unique combination and one which you will want to play again and again. The album also has a seasonal appeal to me and every summer it is played as a background to happy summer days. This is a must for lovers of the bossa nova, samba and sunny days!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introduction to the bossa-nova genre. 13 Oct 2012
By Sergio
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The reason why I was introduced to the marvelous voice and talent of Astrud Gilberto was a song featured in one episode of Mad Men's season 1. I fell in love with the song instantly, and I sure had to get an album of the wonderful artist. this was my introduction to bossa-nova, and what a perfect introduction it was.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good in parts 15 July 2012
Format:MP3 Download|Verified Purchase
A mediocre album from a great Brazilian artist. Far too many tracks sung in English. Only original Portuguese captures the atmosphere of Brazil which I sorely miss since I am not able to go there any more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb! 20 Aug 2011
By Gnigel
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I took a long time to decide to buy this album. I don't know why as it is superb.

A bit crackly (no digital re-mastering) but what can you expect for the price.

Buy it, it's cheap and has 25 tracks of superb 60s Bossa Nova.

Update; it is 8 weeks later and I am still listening to just this CD!
