Anne Clark is something of an oddity, a 1980s new wave poetress who never made it in the UK (I don't recall any mention in the NME or similar music papers at the time) but who established a sizeable and loyal fanbase in mainland Europe that she maintains to this day. I lived in eastern France in the late 80s and she was regularly featured on Strasbourg's indie radio station, played alongside Depeche Mode, Front 242, Skinny Puppy and the like. Many of the tracks on this compilation reflect her typical style, a stridant spoken-word delivery over a robust 80s synth-pop backing. Chief among these are songs like "Our Darkness" and the John Foxx-produced "Heaven" from 1985s Pressure Points LP. This tends to mean that there is a certain sameyness about the delivery of her poems about love, both lost and found, isolation and relationships in general: it takes a gentler music arrangement to provoke a quieter vocal delivery. Philip Larkin's "This Be the Verse" ( the "they F*** you up, your mum and dad" poem) benefits from a mock-brass arangement, for example. The backings are generally faultless, as you would expect with collaborators of the calibre of Foxx (their collaboration was in his "Golden Section" period). There are some omissions though. "Now" with it's layered Philip Glass-style arrepegios is conspicuous by its absence, and rather than fill out the compilation with live versions, it would have been nice to have as a download the original 12" club mix of "Heaven", which was a much heavier beast than the album version presented here.

The best of? You take their word on this for the Croydon born poetess whose first "appearance" on a record was via one of the 101 Club comps which reproduces a letter sent there asking for an audition and stressing she wasn't a musician or much of a singer but a poet- it worked and the editor added "for you Anne opportunity knocks".
The facts are Anne Clark became a big name in Europe and even made the dance charts with Our Darkness. The poem was about nuclear fall out and featured the sax of Josephine Wells of Kissing The Pink
