Book Description

4 Sep 2012
1982, London: James Graveney (now a Lieutenant-Colonel) and Richard Finch (now promoted to Captain), the heroes of Book One of the Richard Finch Series, The Indigo Bird, have both had a "good war" in the Falklands, serving respectively with the Fusiliers and the Special Air Service (SAS). So has James's dynamic wife, Tori, a researcher, who was also caught up in the war. Now they all have to come back to earth with a bump. James is a Lieutenant-Colonel without a command; Richard's attachment to the SAS has come to an end. Fate comes to their rescue. James is unexpectedly posted to Nairobi as Military Attaché to the amiable British High Commissioner, Sir Tom Sheridan. A bloody coup in August 1982 ensures that no-one but Richard wants the job of James's Assistant Military Attaché. James may be married and outwardly respectable; Richard may be professionally ambitious, but it is not long before the two friends are caught up in a series of adventures - amorous, erotic and positively dangerous - in Kenya and Sudan. Once more Max Markham provides a rollercoaster of shocks and surprises against backdrops ranging from sophisticated London to raffish Nairobi, to mercilessly beautiful and dangerous remote, up-country Africa.

This arived in mint condition, very quickly. Full marks to the bookseller.

Since I am the author, I am reluctant to write a "puff" of my own work, other than to say that it has had some good reviews by other people and that readers should not be put off by the publisher's blurb, which is thatv it is a gay erotic novel. It is actually a murder thriller, whose hero happens to be gay and to have a fairly good sex-life. One satisfied member of the public wrote to me:

You are amazingly good at writing and keeping the thriller element going. I could not put the book down until I knew whether or not Richard would actually succeed....what a way to do it! You do really have imagination. I thought that he would survive or something (only just sort of thing) and be able to sprawl out what Richard had tantalisingly said to him before he met his maker!!

You book kept me up reading until 2 am!!

I must NOT pick it up tonight....but I know I will....just too tempting!

Take care, great stuff.

Best to you old chum....there are turns at every page...literally!

5.0 out of 5 stars the best yet! 22 Oct 2012
Although I really liked Max Markham's first book "The Indigo Bird", I'm even more impressed with his new one "The Vertical Land". This story is set in the early 1980s, but in Kenya not Belize. James Graveney's family life is just as complicated as ever. He is still happily married to Tori and their eldest son Jim is still as devoted to his father's boyfriend "Uncle" Richard Finch as he ever was.

When James is unexpectedly posted to Nairobi as Military Attaché to the laid-back British High Commissioner, Sir Tom Sheridan, a series of events takes place that makes for a great story. A bloody coup in August 1982 ensures that no-one but Richard wants the job of James's Assistant Military Attaché and it is not long before the two friends are caught up in a series of adventures - amorous, erotic, and positively dangerous - in Kenya and Sudan. Richard is as politically-incorrect as ever and in this novel he expresses his views on Islam in a way that would now probably get him sacked from the army. He manages in this story to get into an interesting situation with "new kid on the block", Vernon Scamp of the Parachute Regiment, who tends to find himself ending up in really dramatic scrapes. He definitely lives up to his name!
I think Max Markham has a real winner here full of shocks and surprises in settings ranging from sophisticated London to rough Nairobi; as well as some of most beautiful and dangerous parts of Africa with their potentially lethal guerrillas and wildlife.

I couldn't put it down. It is definitely not another "Fifty Shades of Grey". It is a great detective story, with the hero, Captain Richard Finch, for once on the side of the angels, helping the army to trace a missing person. There are even moments of pure comedy, especially in Chapters 5 and 12. I loved it.
