Review

"'An easy to follow guide that works. The Verbal Behavior Approach is motivation driven, creating the desire to learn.' - Kathleen Ricca, M.Ed., parent of a three-year-old boy with autism"

Product Description

The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book, Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it. This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

Very good book 23 April 2010
Format:Paperback
As a parent of an autistic boy wishing to embark on an ABA program I found this book very helpful and very clear. Its a jungle out there when it comes to choosing the best therapies to help your child, and it is very difficult to know what information is useful and trustworthy. We started with an ABA instructor who is supervised by a BCBA using the Verbal Behaviour Approach. The Verbal Behaviour approach to ABA really works as the instructor 'pairs' with the child for 3 weeks or so before trying to do some more serious learning. My son has made enourmous progress since sept 09 when we started the VB approach. Its all about motivation. Due to the approach, he LOVES his instructor and would do anything for her. This book clearly explains the jargon and methodology and is very readable.

ABA is not "mechanical". That is a misinterpretation and is apparent to those of us in the field. Practiced by caring professionals, it can open the world of communication and socialization to children and adults with ASD. Now we have a book that gives parents the information they need to become their child's in-home therapist.

As a practicing Board Certified Behavior Analyst I am constantly writing detailed treatment plans for parents and home treatment teams - an enjoyable yet tedious task. Trying to simplify the technical terms and concepts of Applied Behavior Analysis for people unfamiliar with Skinner's terms has suddenly become easy due to this highly readable and thoroughly enjoyable text. Parents can easily relate to the pain of the initial diagnosis Ms. Barbera received for her son. More importantly, she gives hope and a solid program outline for implementing the Verbal Behavior approach to even the newest participant in this world of spectrum disorders. A "must read" for anyone who wants to see their child or client progress.

Excellent book, very informative and no jargon, just good practical advice. The book is written by a parent who is also a trained Behaviour analyst so you get the benefit of personal experience along with professional advice. Highly recommend.
