Simple, Delicious and Inventive 26 April 2000
By Shalese Huang - Published on
Format: Paperback
Simple, Delicious and Inventive. What more can you want from a cookbook! Chili is great work-day meal in the sense that it is one-dish, it reheats well, freeze well, and it actually tastes better on 2nd, or 3rd day!
This book opens my eyes on the ingredients that can go into a chili pot: orange, apple, raisin, tequila ...etc. If you think chili all tasts the same, try this book. It is also healthful. Every recipe uses about 1 TB of olive and that's it! And trust me, you won't even care the chili is not fatty, because it tastes so good. I am actually not a vegetarian. So when I have left-over meat, I jump them in the chili pot. No problem.
Most of all, this book is E-Z. Every recipe may have a long list of ingredients (mostly spices), but to cook it is pretty much: dump everything in, stir, and walk away.

Delicious!! 23 Nov. 2003

This is such a great book - prior to "going Veg" a few years ago I had a great chili cookbook that was similar to this but with meat all throughout When I first decided to stop eating meat etc I went in search of a new chili cookbook and came across this one and have loved it ever since. There are classic chili recipes from the tex/mex style to different types that are more like veg etable stews to chilis that use ingredients like coffee/wines/tequilla/beer etc. There's a chapter n really spicy chilis and there's a neat chapter on things to do with chili leftovers. I've been really happy with each ofthe recipes I've tried. I have a hard time just sticking to the recipe (love to play/invent in the kitchen) and this book has lots of ideas to draw upon for that purpose as well. There are chilis with beans, chilis with tempeh, chilis with textured soy, etc. The recipes have fun facts about chili sprinkled in and there's even a recipe for homemade chili podwer. The ingredients are integresting and flavorful throughout. Definitely a 5 star cookbook for those with a hunger for chili!
So many great chili recipes. 23 Dec. 2013

I now have several of Robin Robertson's cookbooks. I like the variety of recipes in each of her books, they're always well written and few if any mistakes. Chili is not always expensive to cook either.
BUT, what I like best, is the seasonings she uses. They are always pretty darn good recipes as written and would be a great book for a novice cook that doesn't know seasonings well enough without a recipe, and really wants to try more vegan or vegetarian recipes in their diet. I might add a bit more cumin or red pepper flakes for my own tastes. I adore any kind of chili, so this book was a great find. I have tried numerous recipes in the book, and each were excellent tasting and fairly versatile in adding or trading ingredients based on what you have in the pantry, although my salt requirements dictate that I add more salt than the recipe calls for due to my area's climate, hot and dry. I'm used to that. One thing I like about her cookbooks is she gives the measurement of canned beans needed for a recipe, good in a pinch. I most always make my own beans from dried beans. However, I do keep canned beans stocked in my pantry for THOSE days. Those are the days when I plop the entire recipe's ingredients using canned beans into my slow cooker set on High for an hour or so.

Flaming Firehouse Chili- spicy and hot. I liked it. I have used both kidney and pinto beans. Both work good. I've made this recipe about 7 times now. JUST SO Awesome with cornbread. The husband really likes it too and no complaints that I've made it often either. YAY!

Fifteen bean Chili - very very good as written [with my added salt], then some sour cream on top is just downright yummy.

Avocado Chili Dip - It was good as written, but I did have some cilantro to use up so it went well with it. Corn tortilla rounds chips, YUMMY.

Spicy Fava Bean Chili - I was happy to see this fava bean recipe, as I have so few. It was really good with the marinated artichoke hearts as garnish (I am now hooked on them). I also added sour cream topping.

I tried many more recipes, it's just too many to list.
